Director of Development, Arizona PBS

The Director of Development is a fundraising professional with management responsibilities who designs and implements innovative programs to identify prospective major and/or principal gift donors and executes plans to qualify, cultivate, steward and solicit donors to secure and increase significant philanthropic support in partnership with other development staff, School/Unit Directors, deans and/or faculty and campus leadership, depending on their assigned area(s) of responsibility, aimed at assuring long-term financial support for the ASU Foundation and Arizona State University.

What you'll do

  • Creates and leads a coordinated program of fundraising and engagement activities designed to increase the number and level of annual, major, and principal gift donors in alignment with the strategic priorities of Arizona PBS leadership.
  • Manages a personal portfolio of major gift donors and prospects, with a focus on securing philanthropic gifts of $100,000 or more, and an annual fundraising goal of at least $2 million, based on performance metrics.
  • Leads the planning and execution of development strategies and activities that engage community leaders, media partners, philanthropic supporters, and volunteers to cultivate new individual, corporate, foundation, and institutional donors on behalf of Arizona PBS.
  • Collaborates across Arizona PBS departments-including content, education, community engagement, and production-to align donor interests with station priorities, maximizing philanthropic potential.
  • Oversees the development of compelling fundraising proposals, strategic plans, white papers, budgets, and related materials to secure significant philanthropic investments in public media and educational initiatives.
  • Works closely with internal departments and external stakeholders to coordinate fundraising strategies and increase engagement among high-profile volunteers and donors, including efforts across annual giving, donor relations, corporate partnerships, planned giving, and community events.
  • Ensures stewardship and recognition of all donors in portfolio through personalized communications, events, impact reports, and other meaningful touchpoints.
  • Manages complex fundraising initiatives and station-wide campaigns, including multi-layered proposals that support Arizona PBS's broadcast, digital, and educational programming.
  • Provides supervision and leadership to development staff and volunteers; sets and evaluates individual goals, offers professional development, and ensures alignment with Arizona PBS's mission and fundraising priorities.
  • Ensures compliance with prospect management systems, maintaining accurate and up-to-date records of donor contacts, activities, and progress toward goals.
  • Manages the fundraising budget for assigned areas, optimizing return on investment and controlling expenses while driving revenue growth.
  • Maintains deep knowledge of key supporters and high-potential prospects; oversees research and strategic outreach efforts in coordination with other Arizona PBS departments and fundraising staff.
  • Actively participates as a member of the Arizona PBS development team, sharing best practices and serving as a collaborative resource to colleagues across the station.
  • Fosters and strengthens relationships with internal content producers, education and engagement teams, and station executives to elevate fundraising opportunities and ensure donor priorities are reflected in station initiatives.

What you'll need

  • Exceptional interpersonal skills and the ability to interact effectively with academic leadership, faculty, prospects, donors, and/or volunteers in a wide range of roles
  • Complex problem-solving skills coupled with the ability to conduct research, gather data, analyze information, and prepare effective, accurate, and timely reports and other documents to support development objectives
  • Strong knowledge and understanding of database management
  • Ability to successfully lead, coach and guide a team to achieve desired result
  • Ability to inquire about and understand organizational interests and needs, and determine how to persuade or market to that organization with compelling benefits
  • Ability to exercise good judgment, to demonstrate an understanding of ethics related to development activities, and to use discretion in interactions with donors, prospects, volunteers, and others
  • Ability to foster effective working relationships within a team environment
  • Community relations skills and the ability to communicate and work effectively within a diverse community
  • Knowledge of fundraising techniques including proposal development, prospect identification, program planning, fund solicitation, database management, donor tracking, and social networking and marketing tools
  • Highly developed verbal and written communication skills and the ability to present effectively to small and large groups
  • Ability to maintain a high degree of confidentiality and responsibility regarding information related to Foundation and University business and confidential prospect information
  • Ability to develop knowledge of, respect for, and skills to engage with those of other cultures and backgrounds
  • Ability to represent the institution well and possess an advocate's belief in the vision of ASU as the New American University
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite and comfortable working in donor/prospect computer database systems
  • If this position is assigned to the Athletics Department, either administratively or functionally, compliance with all NCAA rules and regulations is required

Relevant qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree
  • Five (5) years of years of successful professional development and/or fundraising experience with at least two (2) to three (3) years managing a team
  • Or any equivalent combination of education and experience from which comparable knowledge, skills and abilities have been achieved
  • Documented success in personally implementing sophisticated, multi-year cultivation strategies that use a relationship-building and moves management approach leading to successful gift closure
  • Demonstrated ability in securing major grants and gifts from individuals, corporations, foundations, and other private funding sources

Preferred education and experience

  • Advanced degree
  • Five (5) to seven (7) years of years of successful professional development and/or fundraising experience in higher education or college athletics for applicable roles
  • Experience working in Salesforce and Workday
