Director of Graduate Student Advising
Position Information
The Director of Graduate Student Advising provides strategic leadership and oversight for a centralized graduate advising unit within the College of Natural & Agricultural Sciences (CNAS). This role manages professional and supervisory staff, guiding the achievement of departmental and institutional goals through coordinated team efforts. The Director establishes long-term organizational objectives, formulates and implements policies and procedures, and ensures compliance with university, state, and federal regulations. The position manages human, financial, and operational resources to support efficient, compliant, and student-centered graduate program administration. As graduate enrollment continues to grow, now exceeding 900 graduate students across more than 18 programs in CNAS, the Director plays a pivotal role in ensuring consistency, accountability, and strategic alignment across advising, admissions, enrollment management, and program operations. The role also provides high-level support to the Assistant Dean in areas including contract management, compliance, and oversight of graduate academic and administrative processes. This position represents a significant evolution from traditional student services management to one that integrates policy implementation, program assessment, and strategic coordination, reflecting the expanding complexity, scale, and impact of graduate education at UC Riverside.
The full salary range for the Director of Graduate Student Advising is $84,100.00 - $154,700.00 annually. However, the expected pay scale for this position is $84,100.00 - $101,750.00 annually. We base salary offers on a variety of considerations, such as education, licensure and certifications, experience, and other business and organizational needs.
Applicants must have current work authorization when accepting a UCR staff position. Currently, we are unable to sponsor or take over sponsorship of an employment Visa for staff.

Requirements
Educational Requirements
- Bachelor's degree in related area and/or equivalent experience/training. Required
- Master's degree in related area and/or equivalent experience/training. Preferred
Experience Requirements
- 8 - 13 years of related experience. Required
- Previous supervisory/managerial experience. Preferred
Minimum Requirements
- Advanced knowledge of advising and counseling techniques.
- Skills in monitoring/assessing people, processes or services, to make improvements.
- Skills in project management, social perceptiveness to be aware of others' reactions and understanding why they react as they do.
- Ability in problem identification, reasoning.
- Ability to develop original ideas to solve problems, persuade others, and lead.
- Skills in interpreting data analysis reports
Preferred Qualifications
- Knowledge of common University-specific computer application programs and knowledge of University and departmental principles and procedures involved in risk assessment and evaluating risks as to likelihood and consequences.
Key Responsibilities
- Manages graduate employment contracts, compliance, and union-related policies in collaboration with the Assistant Dean 20%
- Manages student services programs. 15%
- Provides direction to professional student services advisors on the more complex issues encountered. 15%
- Leads strategic planning, policy implementation, and special projects in coordination with the Assistant Dean. 15%
- Plans, develops, and administers the student services budget for the organization. 5%
- Makes decisions on performance, salary actions, hiring decisions and other human resources related issues of managed staff. 5%
- Recognizes issues that have organization impact or future implications and advises employees accordingly. 5%
- Evaluates the effectiveness of the student services function, and makes changes to the program to provide better service to organizational management, faculty, and students. 5%
- Represents the student services unit to the organization community and relevant external constituencies. 5%
- Decides which resources will be committed to goals and objectives and how they will be allocated. 5%
- Monitors data, reporting, and compliance for graduate program operations within CNAS. 5%
