Job Description

The Aviation Program at Rocky Mountain College in Billings, Montana invites qualified applicants for the position of Director of the Aviation program. This position is responsible for planning, coordinating, and directing all aspects of the aviation program including curriculum development, Federal Aviation Administration regulatory compliance, flight operations, and accreditation. The director has both administrative and instruction responsibilities, which may include flight instruction. The proportions of each will be negotiated upon hire. This position manages four (4) employees in the Aviation Program, with approximately 30 more employees and work study students supervised by various operational directors. The director carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the College's policies and applicable laws. This is a tenure-eligible position, with a 12-month contract. The start date is May 1, 2026.

Essential responsibilities include:

  • Coordinate academic, flight and simulator education curriculum.
  • Identify resource requirements and manage Aviation Program budgets.
  • Oversee all operations of the RMC Flight Operations through its director.
  • Oversee compliance with Aviation Accreditation Board International requirements.
  • Supervise and administer Aviation Program extra-curricular activities and professional organizations, including the National Intercollegiate Flying Association (NIFA).
  • Coordinate with the Admissions Office to develop recruiting material and actively participate in student recruitment.
  • Participate in graduate placement and planning and conducting activities that raise the profile of the Rocky Mountain College Aviation Program within the community and industry.
  • Perform other duties as may be assigned from time to time.

A Master's degree or equivalent in a relevant field is required, as is extensive experience in the field of aircraft/flight operations and aviation management. Experience as a flight instructor is highly desirable. Federal Aviation Administration certification as a commercial multi-engine pilot or military equivalent is also required. Salary starts at $100,000, and is commensurate with experience.

The Aviation Program offers majors in Aeronautical Science (Professional Pilot), Aviation Management and Uncrewed Aerial Systems. The College owns a fleet of eleven aircraft located two miles away at the Billings Airport and trains students from private pilot through all flight instructor ratings. It is a growing community of about 125,000 people located along the Yellowstone River, near the Beartooth Mountains and Yellowstone National Park that serves as the center of culture, commerce and health care for a multi-state region.
