UTMB Health is a $3.8.2 billion health science center comprised of four campuses, five hospitals, an extensive network of outpatient clinics, and Schools of Medicine, Nursing, Health Professions, Public and Population Health, as well as a Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences, six institutes and over 12 exceptional research centers. UTMB has a long and continuing history of advancing health sciences education, research, and patient care. It was the first academic health center in Texas and is home to the state’s first schools of medicine, nursing, and health professions. UTMB is also home to the Galveston National Laboratory, the only national lab in the State of Texas and one of only two laboratories conducting research on a university campus at Biosafety level 4 level in the U.S. Overall research funding is $176 million and UTMB ranks 62nd nationally in NIH funding among medical schools. The Director of the Sealy Institute for Vaccine Sciences (“SIVS”) will provide strategic and operational leadership for a multidisciplinary research institute, free-standing in the John Sealy School of Medicine, and dedicated to advancing vaccine discovery; preclinical development; clinical trials and research; public policy; and education. The incumbent will lead a team of experienced clinical and pre-clinical researchers to work in collaboration with UTMB schools, academic departments, faculty and external collaborators. The Director will oversee scientific programs, foster cross-campus and external collaborations, secure extramural funding, and guide the institute’s growth as an internationally recognized center for vaccine innovation. This role requires a dynamic scientific leader with a strong record of vaccine-related research, team building, and administrative excellence.

Essential Functions & Required Knowledge:

  • Passionate about improving global public health through vaccine innovation.

Education & Experience:

  • PhD, MD or equivalent degree in relevant scientific discipline.
  • A minimum of 10+ years of experience in vaccine research, and/or vaccine preclinical/clinical development.
  • Direct experience in vaccine-related research with sustained extramural funding.
  • Demonstrated experience in leadership roles within academia, research institutes, or major scientific organizations.
  • Strong publication record in high-impact peer-reviewed journals.
  • Experience managing multidisciplinary teams and complex research programs.
  • Eligibility for academic appointment at the rank of Associate Professor or Professor.
  • Experience leading large collaborative grants, consortia, or translational research initiatives is strongly preferred.

Compensation: A negotiable starting salary is based upon experience, educational background and is very competitive. Additional benefits include a relocation allowance, a superior family benefits program and an unsurpassed state retirement program.
