Dispatcher Supervisor - Law Enforcement Operations

Position Summary

Serves as the Supervisor in charge of the Communications Center of the WashU Police Department. The Supervisor is responsible for the organization and coordination of police related services pertaining to the Communications Center. Work consists of evaluating and determining appropriate actions to be taken on matters involving subordinates and the operational effectiveness and efficiency within the Communications Center. Work performed is under the direction of the Operational Support Bureau Commander.

Job Description

Primary Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Supervise and schedule Communications personnel.
  • Oversee team of Dispatchers and address personnel issues.
  • Serve as the time reviewer and approver for assigned staff in HR System.
  • Conduct quality control reviews of radio/telephone traffic and Computer Aided Dispatch (CAD) entries of Dispatcher II positions.
  • Conduct regular performance evaluations of staff.
  • Dispatch all calls for police services.
  • Transmit necessary information to police units and makes entries into the Department’s Computer Aided Dispatch (CAD) system.
  • Monitor the University’s card-access, CCTV, burglar and fire alarm systems, dispatching the appropriate agency in response to the alarms.
  • Dispatch the Emergency Support Team on medical calls.
  • Create and maintain Dispatch policies and procedures; communicate updates to Dispatch staff and all Department staff, if appropriate; enforce adherence to policies and procedures by staff; maintain compliance with applicable CALEA standards.
  • Department Liaison to Simplex Fire Alarm System and C-Cure 800 Card Access System.
  • Assist Facilities Department with identifying trends and troubleshooting the system.
  • Make recommendations on the need for Police Department access to additional data in the system.
  • Serve as committee member of the Card Access Committee.
  • Plan, conduct, coordinate and maintain records for all training within the Communications Center.
  • Coordinate quarterly Dispatch Staff meetings to distribute updates and promote teamwork initiatives.
  • Act as back-up trainer and equipment coordinator.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

  • Ability to work in an environment that is fast-paced and is exposed simultaneously to multiple audio and visual signals.
  • Employee may be required to work any shift and to occasionally remain on duty beyond normal shift.
  • Employee may occasionally be required to report for duty without prior notice due to emergencies or staffing shortages.

Physical Effort

  • Employee is required to sit for extended periods of time.

Equipment

  • E-911 Communications, computer aided dispatch, multi-disciplined radio, Computer Aided Dispatch (CAD) system.
  • Normal office equipment.

Required Qualifications

Education: High school diploma or equivalent high school certification or combination of education and/or experience.

Certifications: No specific certification is required for this position.

Required Qualifications:

  • Successful completion of any required training to be a state certified Telecommunicator.
  • Pass a drug screen and criminal background investigation.
  • Considerable knowledge of communications equipment; considerable knowledge of and ability to operate a computer.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • One year of WashU Dispatch Communications Center experience.
  • Previous experience as a Dispatcher.
  • Ability to work all shifts.
  • Ability to function effectively in a potentially stressful environment.
  • Ability to type a minimum of 35 words per minute with accuracy.
  • Ability to listen and effectively communicate via telephone, police radio and in person.
  • Considerable knowledge of the geography of the campus and surrounding area.
  • Considerable knowledge of Departmental rules, regulations, policies and procedures.
  • Considerable knowledge of policies, procedures and operating guidelines of NCIC, MULES, REJIS and the FCC.
  • Ability to react quickly and calmly in emergency situations.
  • Ability to interact successfully and courteously with the public in person and/or by telephone.
  • Ability to make emergency decisions under stress and assign priorities based on available information.
  • Ability to write legibly and concisely.

Salary Range

$25.47 - $39.49 / HourlyThe salary range reflects base salaries paid for positions in a given job grade across the University. Individual rates within the range will be determined by factors including one's qualifications and performance, equity with others in the department, market rates for positions within the same grade and department budget.
