Displaced Scholar Program

Brown is committed to hosting displaced and endangered scholars, and to providing the essential resources to ensure they are able to thrive during their time on campus. Scholars are invited to continue their research; teach and deliver educational programming; and engage in workshops, seminars and other collaborative projects throughout the year.

Brown's Displaced Scholars program, which was formed in 2016 in response to the influx of migrants into Europe from war-torn regions such as Syria and Iraq, has hosted a series of visiting professors, graduate students, scientific researchers, artists, and writers. Through the enlightened generosity of members of the Brown community, there are several funds to financially support displaced scholars while they are on campus.

All of these programs are testament to Brown’s proud tradition of responding to crises, locally and globally, in ways that advance our mission to contribute to the community, the nation, and the world through teaching, research, and service. In the face of an increasingly unstable world, the need is ever more pressing to recommit to this work and to ensure that university campuses remain physically and intellectually open and welcoming.

The Displaced Scholars program typically hosts individuals in residence on campus for between six months and two years in academic appointments that are appropriate for their academic backgrounds. Applications are reviewed holistically to:

  • Ensure the University can adequately support the scholars in their time on campus;
  • Ensure the scholars can find an appropriate and adequate academic community on campus; and
  • Ensure the scholars are endangered or at risk in their home countries.

Applicants may not be U.S. citizens or legal residents and must be eligible for sponsorship for a J-1 or H1-B visa. There is no deadline for this program, and applicants will be considered on a rolling basis.

Please provide:

  • A copy of your up-to-date C.V. or resume. If you do not have an up-to-date copy, this can be a brief summary of your background and accomplishments.
  • A brief written summary of your personal situation and how residency at Brown through the Displaced Scholars Program can help.

A member of the University administration will contact you over email after you submit your applications.
