Distinguished Chair and (2) Faculty positions in Brain Health
The McCausland College of Arts and Sciences at the University of South Carolina invites applications for the Peter and Bonnie McCausland Distinguished Chair in Neuroscience and (2) Assistant Professors in Chemistry and Biochemistry. The University of South Carolina has invested heavily in research and clinical care for neurological disorders and is soon to break ground on South Carolina’s first hospital specializing in neurological care on the new University’s Health Sciences Campus. All 3 positions are in the tenure-track with an anticipated start date of August 16, 2026, and will be expected to develop interdisciplinary collaborations with researchers in the School of Medicine, School of Pharmacy, and School of Public Health. The SmartState Centers for Neurotherapeutics and Childhood Neurotherapeutics, Carolina Autism and Neurodevelopment Research Center, and the USC Brain Health Network all provide rich collaborative opportunities for research focused on neurological disorders.
The incoming Assistant Professor in Chemistry and Biochemistry positions require a Ph.D. in biochemistry, molecular biology, structural biology, chemical biology, chemistry, or a related discipline plus a minimum of 2 years of postdoctoral experience by the start date of employment. Successful candidates are expected to develop a cutting-edge, externally funded research program that integrates with existing brain health research at USC but also build strong collaborations with Brain Health clinicians and researchers. Possible research areas include molecular mechanisms of stroke and ischemia injury, neurobiology, neurochemistry, neurodegenerative diseases, or neuro-oncology. Research programs may also apply genomic, proteomic, and transcriptomic techniques to understand brain health at the molecular level. Inquiries about these positions may be directed to Dr. F. Wayne Outten (woutten@sc.edu).
The incoming Peter and Bonnie McCausland Distinguished Chair in Neuroscience will be an established, highly productive scholar that brings a research program focused in or closely complementing University strengths in areas of neurodegenerative disorders, stroke, and neurodevelopmental disorders and must be eligible for appointment at the Professor level per University of South Carolina policy (ACAF 1.06). Academic home for this position will be in either the Departments of Biological Sciences, Chemistry and Biochemistry, or Psychology, depending on the candidate’s area of expertise. This position requires a Ph.D. or M.D. with validated expertise in the neurosciences. Inquiries about this position may be directed to Dr. Jeff Twiss (twiss@mailbox.sc.edu).
