FACULTY VACANCY ANNOUNCEMENT

The Psychology Department at Hunter College invites applications for a position at the rank of Doctoral Lecturer in Clinical Psychology, Developmental Psychology and/or Social Psychology. This is a full-time appointment beginning fall 2026 with a renewable yearly contract. The position is eligible for a Certificate of Continuous Service (analogous to tenure) after 5 years.

Hunter College is located on the Upper East Side of Manhattan. The Psychology Department introduces students to the core concepts of behavior and mental processes through exploration of foundational theories and influential empirical research. Students engage with the full range of the field, from basic biological and neuroscientific foundations, cognition and development to more applied areas focusing on social influences, mental health and psychological well-being. Hunter College has both a strong teaching and research mission serving a diverse student population.

Roles and responsibilities. The doctoral lecturer is a teaching-focused position requiring an annual course load equivalent of 24 credits (6-8 courses per academic year) at the undergraduate level. This teaching load will routinely include two of the department’s three core courses: Introduction to Psychology, Psychological Statistics, and/or Research Methods. Additional courses taught will include introductory and/or upper-level courses in clinical, developmental, and/or social psychology, based upon the successful candidate’s expertise and departmental needs. Evening and weekend teaching may occasionally be required.

The doctoral lecturer teaching load also includes providing one-on-one or small-group mentorship of undergraduate students who seek to obtain experience in research or complete capstone projects (i.e., Honor’s Theses). This will include serving as the primary research mentor for 3-6 students enrolled in independent study or honor’s thesis credit. This mentorship contributes toward the required teaching load. Additional responsibilities may be assigned by the Department Chairperson, including service on departmental, divisional, and College-wide committees.

QUALIFICATIONS

Candidates must have obtained a PhD in Psychology with a specialization in Clinical, Developmental, or Social Psychology. The ideal candidate will have a minimum of three years of experience teaching courses such as Introduction to Psychology, Psychological Statistics, or Research Methods. Experience teaching courses related to clinical, developmental, or social psychology is also highly valued.

As a valued member of our instructional faculty, the position requires interpersonal and organizational skills necessary to sustain quality instruction and collegial engagement.

In addition, we value demonstrated success in one-on-one instructional settings such as independent study mentorship, collaborative writing, or thesis committee engagement with undergraduate or master's students. An independent program of research and scholarly productivity are not a requirement of this position. Evaluation of applications and performance in the position will be based on teaching performance and service to the department and college.

COMPENSATION

Compensation will be commensurate with academic accomplishments and experience within the range for this title (currently $92,454 - $107,686; CUNY Doctoral Lecturer schedule).

CUNY is in the process of implementing salary schedule increases. Once implemented, salaries of eligible employees will increase by 3.5% effective 9/1/26, in accordance with the terms of the PSC-CUNY collective bargaining agreement.
