Position Highlights

This position is responsible for responding to suicide risk assessments to undergraduate and graduate students when mandated by the Dean of Students Office (DOS). The DOS Liaison is a specialized clinical position that serves as the mental health consultant and liaison for DOS. The DOS Liaison will provide culturally responsive crisis assessments, disposition planning, and follow-up care coordination. Additionally, this position will provide direct crisis services (Counselor of the Day coverage and/or Care Coordination support) within Counseling & Psych Services (CAPS) as a member of the Crisis Network. This position for the university will require flexibility and eagerness in developing and sustaining this new program.

Duties & Responsibilities

• Work cooperatively as part of an interdisciplinary campus-based health and mental health team that provides direct clinical services to enrolled U of A students.
• Provide risk assessment, crisis management, and brief treatment services for undergraduate and graduate students seeking help for emotional and behavioral concerns while ensuring the safety and security of university students in acute distress.
• Assesses for danger to self and danger to others. At times the scope of the assessment may include other mental health concerns, for example, bipolar disorder, psychosis, etc..
• Participate in the University Behavioral Intervention Team (BIT), an interdisciplinary team of trained professionals who monitor at-risk student behaviors. The DOS Liaison provides clinical expertise, and updates on crisis evaluations and risk assessments.
• Participate in campus community outreach, prevention, and psycho-educational activities, as well as occasional crisis/emergency response.
• Member of the Campus Crisis Network Team and will cross train with the Crisis Network Co-responder.
• Clinician of the Day responsibilities.
• Provide consultation to families, faculty, staff, administrators, and CHS medical providers.
• Coordination of care with campus and community partners to ensure students are connected with appropriate mental health and university resources.
• Provide oversight and consultation with CAPS providers regarding post-hospital assessments of risk and coordination of supports.
• Provide immediate support, consultation, oversight, and recommendations to CAPS, DOS and other campus partners including UAPD, Housing & Res Life and OIE related to risk assessment and crisis intervention.
• Provide consultation to DOS Student Assistance and Student Accountability Teams regarding student mental health concerns.
• Advocate for students' mental health needs to ensure academic and personal well-being.
• Utilize relevant information technology.
• Participate in relevant CHS and University wide committees, as assigned.
• Provide all services in a manner which is professional, culturally sensitive, and respectful of differences.
• Additional duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

• Ability to work independently to manage crisis and complex clinical situations.
• Strong psychological assessment and diagnostic skills.
• Familiarity with community resources, seeking resources, and building professional referral relationships.
• Strong organizational skills and ability to prioritize multiple tasks.
• Evidence of strong self-awareness of how one's own identities and life experiences impact their counseling strategies and interactions with students.
• Excellent grasp of psychopathology and diagnostic systems.
• Proficient with Microsoft Office applications (Word, PowerPoint, Excel).

Minimum Qualifications

• Master's degree in an applied mental health field (e.g., Social Work or Counseling) from an accredited institution.
• Currently licensed in the State of Arizona or eligible for Arizona state licensure within 6 months as a Licensed Counselor (LPC), Social Worker (LCSW), Marriage and Family Counselor (LMFT) or licensed psychologist.
• Minimum of 5 years of relevant work experience including experience in case management, or equivalent combination of education and work experience.
• Clinical interest/experience in working with clients with high-risk mental health issues.

Preferred Qualifications

• Advanced training and/or experience in risk assessment and crisis intervention.
• Prior clinical experience in a multidisciplinary clinic setting.
• Prior experience in college mental health, including crisis assessment and management, mental health triage, brief psychotherapy and referrals, as indicated.
• Experience utilizing an electronic health record.
• Experience working with multifaceted populations.
• Experience and expertise regarding crisis intervention and assessment of risk to self and others.
• Experience navigating complex systems of care and utilizing systems-informed consultative skills.
• Experience maintaining clinical records and documenting risk assessments in compliance with ethics, law, and best practices.
