About the Position

Working under the supervision of the Director of Counseling, Embedded Counselors provide intake assessment, crisis intervention, and short-term individual, couples, and group counseling to currently enrolled students. The Counselor in Housing works with on-campus residents, and the Counselor in SEAS works with SEAS program participants. Embedded Counselors work collaboratively with the Student Health and Counseling team, the University Housing and Residential Life or SEAS team, and campus and community partners in a multidisciplinary approach to help students achieve and maintain optimum wellness.

Embedded Counselors design and implement outreach programs and interventions, and serve as liaisons to their specific departments. The counselors contribute to the overall training of campus staff through workshops and mentorship, and may also provide individual and group supervision to pre-licensed MFT, MSW, and PCC interns.

The student population at Cal State East Bay is diverse, presenting with a wide range of psychosocial, developmental, interpersonal, and relational concerns. Counselor Faculty assume independent responsibility for their cases, including identification of major problems, determining services needed, selecting and using appropriate counseling strategies, assessing results, and, where appropriate, referring to additional services.

This is a temporary, part-time (either 0.60 or 0.80 time-base) position, with the possibility of reappointment. For the 2024/25 academic year, the appointment begins on August 19, 2024 and ends on May 23, 2025.

Responsibilities

Embedded Counselors provide clinical services including intake assessment, crisis intervention, short-term individual, group, and couples therapy, and some case management. Counselors also provide outreach programs about mental health, training and consultation for staff, and debriefing and assistance during University crises as needed.

Required Qualifications

  • Ability to assess and intervene in crisis situations.
  • Ability to provide short-term individual, couples, and group counseling.
  • Ability to provide education and counseling for substance abuse.
  • Ability to provide debriefing and assistance during university-wide crises.
  • Ability to make presentations to large and small groups on campus, and design outreach programs for specific populations.
  • Flexibility to work after hours or on weekends for occasional outreach programs or crisis intervention.
  • Demonstrated ability to connect and communicate effectively with diverse student, faculty, and staff community.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Possession of an appropriate terminal degree, e.g., a master's or doctorate in behavioral sciences, counseling, psychology or a specific related academic field.
  • Licensed by California Board of Behavioral Sciences as LMFT, LCSW, LPCC, or Clinical Psychologist. Committee will consider license-eligible candidates who are in the process of completing their exams, but candidate must possess valid California license at time of hire.

Preferred Skills and Knowledge

  • Experience on multidisciplinary team of mental health professionals and primary care clinicians within an integrated center.
  • Experience working in higher education, particularly in Residential Life or with low-income, first generation students of color, strongly preferred.
  • Experience facilitating both psychoeducational and interpersonal process groups.
  • Experience treating a wide variety of issues, including substance abuse, relationship issues, depression, anxiety, sexual assault, anger management, eating disorders, and domestic violence.
  • Proficient in electronic scheduling and records.
  • Strong interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills.
  • Experience providing short-term couples counseling.
  • Proficient in Spanish, Mandarin, or Cantonese.
