Brief Statement of Duties:
The English Department at Northern Michigan University invites applications for a Tenure Track position at the rank of Assistant Professor with an open emphasis in film studies, to begin in August 2026.
The successful candidate will teach a 3/3 load of primarily undergraduate film courses (e.g., Introduction to Film Studies, Topics in Film Theory, History of World Cinema, Authorship in Cinema, National Cinema), with the opportunity to propose and teach graduate-level courses. The candidate will also oversee the curriculum of our general-education Introduction to Film Studies course (EN 125), maintain an active research agenda in film studies, and contribute to department- and university-level academic service. This is a campus-based position. This position is not currently available for sponsorship.
Minimum Qualifications
Required Education:
Doctorate or equivalent terminal degree
Discipline/Degree Area:
Film Studies, Cinema Studies, or English with a Film Studies specialization
Required Specialized Training/Certifications:
A PhD in Film Studies, Cinema Studies, or English with a Film Studies specialization, granted by August 15, 2026.
Evidence of strong scholarship or scholarly potential in film studies.
Required Minimum Work Experience:
At least three years of effective teaching at the college or university level.
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, or Attributes Required for Satisfactory Performance of the Position Duties:
Ability to work collaboratively and communicate effectively.
Commitment to learners of all abilities and backgrounds.
Ability to enact innovative and effective pedagogies.
Experience integrating technology, digital resources, and learning management software into one's pedagogy.
Additional Desirable Qualifications:
Experience developing and teaching original courses in film studies.
Ability to teach courses in NMU's undergraduate General Education program (e.g., first-year composition, mythology, introductory literature).
Ability to participate in ongoing assessment practices across course, department, and university levels.
