Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in environmental health and safety, biological or physical science, or related discipline.
- Three to five years of experience in environmental safety with knowledge of research laboratory operations, hazardous materials management, and hazardous waste regulations.
- Certified Hazardous Materials Manager, Hazardous Materials Technician, or other certification related to environmental safety preferred.
- Certified Hazardous Materials Manager, Hazardous Materials Technician, or related professional certification.
- Manages hazardous and universal waste programs, dangerous goods shipping, and hazardous spill response measures.
- Develops and manages a comprehensive environmental safety program in support of the Environmental Health, Safety, and Emergency Management mission.
- Develops new policies and programs to address new or evolving trends, best practices, or to ensure compliance.
- Provides training using a variety of platforms to include in-person and online.
- Evaluates effectiveness of training programs.
- Remains current on industry trends and make appropriate changes to program areas of responsibility.
- Coordinates with other industry professionals, consultants, and vendors to provide appropriate environmental safety services on campus.
- Supports research and teaching with technical information and expertise, regulatory guidance, and through appropriate management of hazardous materials and hazardous waste.
- Provides consultation on environmental safety matters related to facilities planning and construction projects including underground storage tanks, air permitting, property acquisitions, wastewater management, and spill prevention, control, and countermeasure plans.
- Recommends and implements appropriate procedures to address safety and regulatory concerns.
- Reviews and updates environmental safety policies and programs in relation to standards and regulations.
- Provides training and educational resources on environmental health and safety.
- Understands and effectively communicates waste minimization and pollution prevention strategies to a diverse community with varying levels of health and safety knowledge.
- Communicates corrective actions in an effective manner to various entities and individuals across campus.
- Formulates written and verbal reports to communicate findings, recommendations, and corrective actions.
- Serves leading roles on the Biosafety Committee, Laboratory Safety Committee and Radiation Safety Committee.
- Works closely with the Office of Research Protections to support scholarship and innovation, ensure regulatory compliance, and promote responsible conduct in research.
- Serves as liaison with external environmental safety agencies.
- Develops appropriate reports for a wide range of internal and external audiences.
Suggested Salary Range: $69,278 - $75,000
