Job Summary
The School of Science and Technology (SST) Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) officer will be responsible for developing a fully compliant environmental protection, health, and safety program focused on laboratory operation in the SST and the School of Nursing. Working closely with the Director of EHS for the college, the successful candidate will be responsible for health and safety relating to OSHA and Hazardous Communication (Right to Know), Laboratory Standard (Chemical Hygiene Plan), laboratory inspections, safety equipment, protective equipment, and staffing training. In particular, the successful candidate will be responsible for (1) training on U.S. EPA and DNR Hazardous chemical waste, biohazards, spills, disposal, pick-ups, and managing documentations of all regulatory requirements for SST; (2) assisting faculty as needed in providing environmental, health, and safety classroom training for students; and (3) completing Purchase Orders for the chemical/biological wastes, fume hoods certification, and biological safety cabinets certifications.
Responsibilities
- Oversee and manage a fully compliant environmental protection, health, and safety program focused on laboratory operations in the SST and the School of Nursing; with subsequent program implementation, monitoring, and reporting in order to comply with all applicable federal, state, and local regulations.
- Oversee and manage the chemical and biological hygiene plan, to include systems for reception, tracking, storage, use, and disposal of all chemical and biological materials and managing documentation of all regulatory requirements for compliance.
- Direct, train, and document all training for SST faculty and staff in OSHA requirements to meet all federal, state, and local regulations.
- Assist faculty, as needed, in providing environmental, health, and safety classroom training for students.
- Manage the collection and storage of departmental chemical and biological wastes.
- Performs the duties of building emergency manager for H1 and H2.
- Supervise laboratory technicians responsible for managing EHS matters in building A and H.
- Act as the SST radiation safety officer.
- Work along faculty and other laboratory staff to test, calibrate, install, and perform routine inspection of laboratory safety equipment.
Required Qualifications
4 Year / Bachelor's Degree in Environmental Safety, Industrial Hygiene, Industrial Management, Biology, Chemistry, Physics or closely related field.
2+ years professional experience in the field
Preferred Qualifications
Experience in an academic or industrial settings or state/federal positions
