Job Summary
The Division of Risk Management and Safety has an opening for an Environmental Protection Technician to support the AU Partnership with Fort Benning! This is an exciting opportunity to help support the Fort Benning environmental compliance program. The successful candidate will work alongside professionals in both Auburn University's Environmental Health and Safety Department and the Ft. Benning Department of Public Works to assist with Ft. Benning's Municipal Separate Storm Sewer System (MS4) program and the National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NPDES). This position provides an excellent opportunity to gain hands-on experience in the field of environmental health and safety while working with a dynamic team. This position will also perform spill response duties as part of the Fort Benning Spill Response Team.
Essential Functions
- Assists with planning, preparing and coordinating implementation of Fort Benning Phase II NPDES Stormwater Permit. Assists with on-going inspections and provides technical assistance for the erosion and sedimentation control practices used at Fort Benning construction sites.
- Provide environmental consultation and support to assist units, government branches, and/or federal contractors with compliance regarding state, federal and DOD environmental regulations and guidelines including review of RECs / 144Rs.
- Assists with planning, preparing and coordinating implementation of the Fort Benning Surface Mining Permit. Assists with on-going inspections and provides technical assistance for the erosion and sedimentation control practices used at Fort Benning Surface Mining Permitted borrow areas.
- Participate in the chemical and/or hazardous materials emergency response team. Assists with spill cleanup, report spill to proper point of contacts, and file spill reports both internally and externally.
- Assist with and participate in planning and organizing community outreach and engagement.
- Conduct field surveys to assess the condition of stormwater infrastructure.
- Utilize GIS software to map and analyze data.
- Assist in the development and implementation of MS4 compliance strategies.
- Assist with the preparation of reports database management and presentations.
- Participate in team meetings and project discussions.
- All other assigned duties.

Minimum Qualifications
Level I
- High school diploma or equivalent
Level II
- High school diploma or equivalent plus 2 year of experience OR
- Associate's degree
Level III
- High school diploma or equivalent plus 4 year of experience OR
- Associate's degree plus 2 years of experience OR
- Bachelor's degree
Level IV
- High school diploma or equivalent plus 6 year of experience OR
- Associate's degree plus 4 years of experience OR
- Bachelor's degree plus 2 years of experience
Scope of Experience: Experience in managing environmental compliance programs such as hazardous waste, clean water, clean air, or storage tank management.
Minimum Skills and Abilities
- Performs a limited variety of simple, repetitive tasks.
Minimum Technology Skills
- Basic computer skills and familiarity with Microsoft Excel, Word, and Outlook.
Desired Qualifications
- Progressive environmental experience with implementing federal and state regulations for surface water quality protection or other related environmental programs.
- Experience in water resources and stormwater management preferred. Training in GIS, Stormwater BMP Inspection & Maintenance and erosion and sediment control practices is also desirable.
Salary Range: $36,240 - $77,630
