Description
Maintains, inspects, troubleshoots, programs and tests alarm systems and other assigned equipment. Under the general supervision of the electric services supervisor, this position is the lead technician working with the life safety services. Maintains comprehensive records utilizing computer programs for all building alarm checks, supervisory panel checks, and alarm tests. Maintains, inspects, troubleshoots and repairs all emergency generator power systems and associated equipment. Troubleshoots and repairs wiring and other circuitry.
Examples of Duties
60%: Maintains, inspects, troubleshoots, and tests alarm systems and other assigned equipment. Installs magnetic fire door safety holders associated circuitry. Troubleshoots and repairs elevator fire recall and shunt trip electrical systems. Monitors, troubleshoots, and inspects fire sprinkler shut off and tamper proof Valve systems. Design system integration, installs and maintains specialty alarms and other warning devices associated with physically and developmentally impaired students.
Under the general supervision of the Electrical Services Supervisor, this position is the lead technician working with the life safety Technicians, duties include: - 15%: Orders materials to complete work. Prioritizes life safety technicians to work assignments. Works closely with the electric services supervisor to assure all life safety needs of the university. Provides technical assistance to technicians.
15%: Maintains comprehensive records utilizing computer programs for all building alarm checks, supervisory panel checks, and alarm tests. Schedules smoke detector tests, cleaning, and replacement. Fills out daily log reports. Maintains up to date fire and life safety code manuals. Prepares fire alarm system test reports for campus child care centers quarterly. Prepares fire alarm system test reports for State Fire Marshall and Insurance Company annually.
5%: Maintains, inspects, troubleshoots and repairs all emergency generator power systems and associated equipment. Inspects, troubleshoots, and repairs emergency transfer switches associated with emergency generators. Inspects and maintains uninterruptable power source (ups) systems and battery back-ups associated with all university back-up power requirements.
5%: Installs modifies, inspects, and tests assigned alarm and control systems. Performs electrical and electronics repairs to assigned systems and components. Systems supported include; fire pumps, freon detectors, fire alarms, duress and security alarms, and generators. Assist contractors with modifications and designs of alarm systems. Maintains the fire pump testing program and keeps records of all tests and repairs, with the aid of other life safety techs. Maintenance and repair including preventive maintenance, trouble shooting, and emergency repairs of alarm systems. Maintains campus hot work/burn permit program and is custodian of records.
Typical Qualifications
Education: Completion of related alarm systems trade school related military experience may substitute on a 1 year for 1 year basis. Electronic circuitry and repair school preferred. Edwards System Training required within 1 year of employment. Education may be substituted for experience or experience may be substituted for education. Note that equivalencies are based on the following: AA = 2 years experience; BA/BS = 4 years experience; MA/MS = 6 years experience; PhD = 8 years experience.
Experience: Four (4) years experience with fire alarm systems and generators as a seasoned trades person in an industrial or commercial setting to include two years experience in electronic troubleshooting/repair and working with automated fire detection panels.
Supervisory Responsibilities: Regular Part-Time or Full-Time Employees - 5
Budget Responsibilities: Review Budget
Working Hours and Days: Monday - Friday 7:30am to 4:00pm

Special Skills/Abilities/Knowledge: Read and interpret blueprints, diagrams, drawings, and schematics. Mechanical and electrical ability, troubleshooting skills, Working knowledge of AC/DC fundamentals, series/parallel circuits, and solid-state controls. Working knowledge of applicable codes (nec, nfpa,92, 8, 101, and ada requirements.
