Required qualifications:
Master's Degree (foreign equivalent or higher). Three (3) years of full-time experience, post-Bachelor's Degree, in advising, counseling, and/or working with students in an educational capacity (Graduate level student work experience may be considered). Experience interacting with a diverse student population in an academic environment. Knowledge of student services-related technology (e.g., PeopleSoft, Blackboard, EAB).
Preferred Qualifications:
Master's Degree (foreign equivalent or higher) in Counseling, Education, Higher Education, Social Work, Teaching, or a related discipline. Direct advising and/or counseling experience, including experience working with transfer students.
Experience in higher education, particularly supporting first-generation, transfer, or historically underrepresented student populations. Experience with Opportunity Programs (EOP, SEEK, HEOP, College Discovery, etc.) and/or working with educationally and financially disadvantaged students. Financial aid counseling experience with a functional knowledge of state and federal guidelines.
Designing and implementing programs and events to support student success, retention, and transfer transitions. Experience teaching new student seminars.
Brief Description of Duties:
The primary purpose of the EOP/AIM Counselor with a transfer student specialist focus is to provide EOP students--including incoming transfers--with academic, financial, personal, and career counseling. The incumbent assists students with academic planning while ensuring they remain on target to graduate and maintain financial aid eligibility. The EOP Counselor manages a caseload of approximately 100 EOP/AIM students, while guiding them toward becoming well-rounded, globally aware citizens.
Responsibilities include:
- Assisting students in academic planning tailored to their abilities, interests, and prior academic experience, including transfer credit evaluation.
- Ensuring students meet guidelines to receive the maximum amount of financial aid they are entitled to.
- Conveying and interpreting the University's academic rules, regulations, prerequisites, programs, majors, and courses of study.
- Collaborating with faculty across schools or departments to enhance advisement and transfer student integration.
- Advocating for and referring students to relevant offices (counseling & psychological services, career planning, disability support services, etc.) as appropriate.
- Facilitating exposure to experiential learning, research opportunities, personal/professional development, leadership, and campus involvement.
- Supporting the EOP Pre-Freshman Summer Academy and playing an integral role in the transition of students from high school or other institutions into the university community.
The incumbent must demonstrate excellent customer service and interpersonal skills, strong organizational and time-management abilities, and exceptional attention to detail. Work requires the ability to function independently and collaboratively in a team-oriented environment. Some night and weekend hours will be required.
- Provide academic advising and counseling, including course registration, student record reviews, academic planning, transfer credit evaluation, financial counseling, career counseling, and personal/developmental counseling to assigned students through individual and group sessions. Maintain accurate and comprehensive records on all assigned students.
- Contribute to the development and execution of the EOP/AIM Pre-Freshman Summer Academy.
- Serve as liaison and advocate for program and transfer students within the campus and with external agencies.
- Develop and implement events and activities that contribute to student success, including programs tailored to transfer students.
- Other duties or projects as assigned as appropriate to rank and departmental mission.
Special Notes:
This is a full-time appointment. FLSA Exempt position, not eligible for the overtime provisions of the FLSA. Minimum salary threshold must be met to maintain FLSA exemption.
In addition to the employee's base salary, this position is eligible for $4000 UUP annual location pay, paid biweekly.
