Description
WELCOME:
Solano Community College values the diversity of our community and is committed to honoring and empowering all of our students. We are seeking highly motivated applicants who excel in their chosen fields and are committed to working with the students from our communities. We invite student-oriented applicants who provide culturally responsive teaching, use a strength-based approach centered on students and are committed to continuous improvement of instructional effectiveness.
Solano Community College District is a single college district that serves one of the most ethnically and racially diverse counties in California. Located on the ancestral lands of the Patwin people, Solano Community College's Fairfield campus is in the heart of Suisun Valley midway between San Francisco and Sacramento. We also serve students at centers in Vallejo and Vacaville, at Travis Air Force Base, and at three correctional facilities. Our many innovative programs are supported by state-of-the-art facilities, including a new library and learning center, science labs, and lecture rooms.
Students who attend Solano Community College are dedicated, persistent, and remarkable individuals who deserve the best opportunities a community college can provide. Our students come from both urban and rural communities, the military, and other diverse economic, cultural and ethnic backgrounds. We serve students who represent the following cultures: Asian American (6%), Black/African American (15%), Filipino/a/x (9%), Hispanic/Latino/a/x (36%), Pacific Islanders (1%), Multi-Ethnic (9%), and White Non-Hispanic (22%). We seek candidates who embrace our community and our student population, and who have an unwavering commitment to equity, especially the elimination of barriers to college access, success, and completion.
Solano Community College is committed to applying promising practices in support of diversity, equity, inclusion and accessibility (DEIA). We are cultivating a supportive and inclusive environment for all faculty, staff, and students.
We invite you to join us on our journey to provide equitable and anti-racist education honoring and empowering the students of Solano Community College.
ABOUT THE DEPARTMENT:
The Ethnic Studies Department is part of the Social and Behavioral Sciences Division of Solano Community College (SCC). Because students are required to complete an ethnic studies course to earn an associate degree and/or transfer to four-year universities, the Ethnic Studies Department plays a crucial role in the educational trajectory of SCC students, providing foundational racial-literacy curricula that students take with them for the rest of their lives.
SCC's Ethnic Studies Department is small but mighty, with one full-time faculty who is a Chicana/o/x and Latina/o/x Studies specialist and several part-time instructors who teach Introduction to Ethnic Studies. We seek to grow the department and its programmatic offerings. There is increased student interest in our A.A. in Ethnic Studies and a need to develop more courses and degrees in the four specialized ethnic studies fields: Black/African American Studies; Chicana/o/x and Latina/o/x Studies; Native American Studies; and Asian American and Pacific Islander Studies.
DESCRIPTION:
We seek candidates who have scholarly training in, a passion for, and a commitment to the field of ethnic studies, which is rooted in a specific history of racial-justice activism and distinct from "multicultural education" broadly speaking. The successful candidate will teach introductory courses in ethnic studies including Introduction to Ethnic Studies, which surveys the histories and cultures of the four groups at the core of ethnic studies scholarship and practice: Black/African Americans, Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders, U.S. Latinos, and Native/Indigenous Americans. We are specifically seeking candidates who have expertise in Black/African American Studies who are excited to play a key role in growing SCC's ethnic studies program overall and expanding degree and course offerings in Black/African American Studies specifically.
The successful candidate will be a community-engaged scholar committed to antiracist, decolonial, and social-justice pedagogy. We invite student-centered applicants who celebrate and engage students' community cultural wealth and use culturally responsive, assets-based methods in curriculum and pedagogy to engage the diverse learning styles and needs of students.
We specifically seek candidates who demonstrate deep commitment to supporting Black students and communities; candidates interested in helping us weave Black excellence and joy into the fabric of campus life. Our college is engaged in sustained efforts to ensure Black students see themselves reflected in curriculum and campus culture. We seek to hire someone who wants to be a key collaborator and leader in such efforts; someone who is enthusiastic about bridging academic and student-services divides by supporting student-equity programs and programs focused on Black student success.
To best serve our community, we are seeking ethnic studies educators enthusiastic to teach in-person classes at our main campus in Fairfield as well as our Vallejo and Vacaville Centers. Additionally, there is high demand for faculty interested in teaching justice-impacted students at nearby state correctional facilities as part of our Rising Scholars Program.
Lastly, the ideal candidate will be skilled in teaching online and developing effective and engaging online curriculum. The ability to use technology and active learning strategies in person and online will be expected. Teaching may occur on campus and/or synchronously and asynchronously online (once distance education training requirements have been met and approved). Candidates who can demonstrate skill in multiple modalities utilizing a variety of teaching strategies are strongly encouraged to apply.
We anticipate the first round of interviews to be conducted in-person the week of March 23rd, 2026. Second round interviews are tentatively set for the week of April 13th, 2026. All dates are subject to change.
