Exams Invigilator

University of Buckingham - Registry

Location:Buckingham
Salary:£16 per hour
Hours:Part Time
Contract Type:Temporary
Placed On:25th February 2026
Closes:13th March 2026
Job Ref:229

SALARY & HOURS: £16 per hour, Ad-Hoc, Casual Hours

The University of Buckingham is among the fifteen smallest in the UK and is rightly proud of its distinctive features, namely: it is the only private University in the UK with a Royal Charter; secondly, it pioneered the first accelerated (two-year) degree; and finally, it provides students with a personalised learning experience through its small-group academic tutorial system and exceptional pastoral care provision.

As a Casual Exams Invigilator, you will prepare assessment venues by ensuring all necessary materials are in place and the environment is conducive to assessment conditions. You will monitor exams by checking student identification, verifying attendance, and maintaining a quiet and controlled environment. Ensuring academic integrity is crucial, so you will monitor students to ensure adherence to regulations and respond promptly to any queries or incidents. You will also record and report any breaches of regulations to the relevant manager. Post-assessment duties include assisting in tidying the venue and handling confidential documents.

Throughout your role, you will present as a respectful representative of the university to both internal and external stakeholders. We are looking for individuals with a willingness to learn and receive training. Strong communication skills are essential, as you will need to communicate clearly and concisely with students and staff. You will be confident to take the lead on the exam setting on the day and support students as required.

The post holders will be good timekeepers and have great attention to detail. Effective teamwork is important, as you will collaborate with other invigilators and faculty staff. You should be able to make timely and considered decisions within established guidelines and use initiative to resolve standard problems while escalating significant issues. Invigilators recognise that exams are a stressful time for students and provide a calm and approachable presence. A good understanding of basic IT software to support students is key, such as Office 365 packages, and logging in to PCs. A commitment to promoting equality and diversity in all areas of work is also required.

This position offers flexible, ad hoc work, with exams held at various times and locations throughout the year. You will work within a professional and supportive team and earn a competitive hourly rate of pay. Invigilators are set up with University of Buckingham I.T accounts, and therefore all communications are managed through the UoB staff account, which invigilators are expected to monitor regularly.

We know that sometimes people can be put off applying for a job if they think they can’t tick every box, but we are invested in our people and their development, so we encourage you to apply if you believe you have the majority of the skills and experience required and are keen to develop further! Please refer to the Job Profile for more details about the key responsibilities of this role. The University reserves the right to interview candidates upon application and appoint before the deadline so early application is encouraged to avoid disappointment.

The closing date for applications is Friday 13th March 2026.
