Job Description Summary:

The Adult Education Faculty supports learning on campus, all distance learning modalities, in simulation, and through clinical experiences. Responsible for preparing and delivering coursework in engaging, innovative, and discipline-appropriate ways that reflect a commitment to student success and creating an environment that promotes belonging for all.

Job Description:

Provide engaging, innovative college-readiness instruction aligned with Texas Success Initiative Assessment (TSIA) standards in English Language Arts & Reading (ELAR) for underprepared adult learners. Foster a supportive, collaborative learning environment that promotes persistence and student success.

Instruction may be delivered in person at designated ACC regions-Central, North, and South campuses-and online, as assigned. Faculty must meet all professional standards in accordance with college policies and procedures.

Principal Responsibilities and Duties

  • Design and develop a comprehensive TSI-aligned ELAR curriculum and collaborate with the instructional team while supporting colleagues in implementing the curriculum
  • Evaluate the effectiveness of current practices and make data-driven adjustments to foster student success
  • Prepare and teach TSIA-aligned ELAR courses for a multicultural student population, aligned with approved learning outcomes
  • Apply best practices in classroom and online management to promote accessibility, engagement, and retention
  • Provide accessible and individualized academic support, including one-on-one assistance
  • Collaborate with program leaders, faculty, and coordinators to support student achievement
  • Maintain a positive and culturally responsive classroom environment
  • Evaluate student progress and provide clear, timely feedback reflecting program learning outcomes and departmental expectations.
  • Provide teaching and mentoring services to students in a manner that does not discriminate based on race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, national origin, disability, age, protected veteran status, political affiliation, or other protected categories.
  • Remain current in the field through a variety of professional development activities.
  • Perform other related tasks as assigned by the department chair, dean, and/or associate vice chancellor, vice chancellor, or executive vice chancellor.

Technology

  • Demonstrated proficiency using computer applications, online resources, video creation, and other technologies for the classroom.
  • Demonstrated proficiency using an online learning management system such as Blackboard Ultra to develop and build course content and perform administrative duties (posting office hours, syllabi, etc.)

Principal Professional Standards

  • Appropriate use of the college's learning management system.
  • Meet deadlines for attendance certification and final course grade submission.
  • Maintain regular office hours to assist students and improve student retention and success.
  • Attend and participate in college-wide, campus, department, or other activities and meetings.
  • Recognize and reflect standards of civility and collegiality in all interactions.
  • Comply with published college policies and procedures and meet professional standards for teaching in a community college.

Minimum Education

  • Bachelor's degree in Reading, Literacy, English, Language Arts, Curriculum & Instruction, Curriculum Design, or a related field

Required Experience

  • Two years of teaching adult or developmental education for underprepared postsecondary students.
  • Four years of related program experience can be substituted for specific teaching experience
  • Experience working with educationally and/or economically disadvantaged adult learners

Preferred Qualifications

  • Graduate coursework in education with a focus on adult learners
  • Teaching ENGL or a related college credit course

  • Ability to exhibit creativity, patience, and flexibility in teaching approaches
  • Ability to apply ethics, integrity, and sound professional judgment.
  • A commitment to establishing and maintaining positive working relationships with students, colleagues, and staff representing multicultural and socioeconomic backgrounds.
  • Dynamic, non-traditional instructional delivery methods to teach students of widely varying levels of proficiency and from various backgrounds and abilities.
  • Appropriate and up-to-date knowledge of the discipline and subject matter.
  • Experience using technology as an instructional aide, where appropriate, to enhance learning.
  • Documented experience with active and applied teaching and learning methodologies.
  • A strong commitment to teaching in a community college setting, including teaching practices that reflect an understanding of the multicultural classroom and the benefits of cultural awareness and sensitivity in the classroom and the workplace.
  • Commitment to a culture of care for all.
  • Commitment to the comprehensive mission of Austin Community College and to the principles and practices associated with Servant-Leadership.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with students with a wide range of skills and backgrounds.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work with varied populations from the local community as well as students, staff, faculty, and administration.
  • Strength in communication media, both verbal and written, as well as listening.
  • Strong organizational skills, attention to detail, ability to maintain an established schedule, including evenings and weekends, and possible multiple campus locations that may vary by semester.
  • Commitment to maintaining the confidentiality of student information.
  • Understanding of what it means to teach in a community college environment that often serves underprepared and underserved students.

Working Conditions & Requirements

  • Ability to teach evenings and weekends
  • Ability to teach in person at any ACC campus and online
  • Valid Texas driver's license and reliable transportation for local travel
  • Work is performed in the classroom, ACCelerator labs, or online environments.
  • Requires extended standing, walking, sitting, and reaching. Occasional lifting of up to 20 pounds.
  • Work safely and follow safety rules. Report unsafe working conditions and behavior. Take reasonable and prudent actions to prevent others from engaging in unsafe practices.

Salary Range

$64,427 - $96,197 (Based on a 10.5-month contract to start Fall 2026)
