Job Description
The School of Visual Communication (VisCom) at Ohio University invites applications for a full-time, tenure-track position in Photojournalism with a focus in conservation, editorial, or documentary storytelling. This position is part of a strategic interdisciplinary cluster hire that advances Ohio University's Dynamic Strategy, particularly its commitment to experiential learning, applied research, and alumni engagement.
This position is being posted as an Open Rank tenure-track faculty role. Rank will be negotiated at the time of hire and will be based on the candidate's unique skills set, education and experience levels, and professional credentials.
We seek an accomplished visual journalist and educator who brings a passion for storytelling, a strong commitment to hands-on teaching, and the ability to connect students with real-world experiences that drive meaningful impact.
Ohio University, the Scripps College of Communication, and the School of Visual Communication are deeply committed to providing students with meaningful, broadly defined experiential learning opportunities. The successful candidate will demonstrate a shared commitment to this educational approach and will receive institutional support in developing and leading high-impact, real-world learning experiences as part of their faculty role.
Primary responsibilities and skills:
- Teach a combination of undergraduate and graduate courses in photojournalism, storytelling, and editorial or documentary photography.
- Design and lead immersive, field-based classes and experiential learning projects that engage students with real clients, communities, and subject matter.
- Advise graduate students and serve on MFA and MA thesis/project committees.
- Contribute to interdisciplinary storytelling initiatives related to environmental issues, public health, and civic engagement.
- Develop partnerships with nonprofits, advocacy organizations, and media outlets to support community-based storytelling and applied research.
- Lead students in creating portfolio-ready visual stories for publication, exhibition, and professional review.
- Maintain an active record of creative or scholarly work with public impact, aligned with OHIO's R1 research ambitions.
- Participate in curriculum development and contribute to the continued excellence and innovation of the school's photography sequences.
- Support new offerings such as VisCom's Sports Photojournalism Certificate and contribute to the development of photography minors and interdisciplinary collaborations.
- Develop, implement, and sustain meaningful experiential learning opportunities-broadly defined-that prepare students for professional practice through real-world, field-based, and client-engaged projects.
- Collaborate with faculty, industry partners, and community organizations to create high-impact learning experiences that align with the school's commitment to hands-on education.
- Engage with alumni, industry mentors, and prospective employers to strengthen the school's professional network.
Along with teaching, mentoring, and advising graduate and undergraduate students, the successful candidate is expected to bring a collaborative spirit to the school's other majors, in addition to Photojournalism.
All school faculty are expected to provide service to the school, to the Scripps College of Communication, and to Ohio University, as well as maintain a strong level of their own creative/professional activities in their respective field.

- At least a Bachelor's degree in the field of visual communication, photojournalism, or a related field.
- At least 10 years of work-related experience working as a professional photojournalist or photo editor.

- A professional track record of at least seven years in editorial, conservation, or documentary photography, with national or international publication or exhibition credits.
