Basic Functions
Santa Barbara City College is seeking a full-time, tenure track faculty member position in the Theatre Arts Program to start in Fall 2026. In 2009, SBCC was designated as an Hispanic-Serving Institution, reflecting our responsibility to support and serve the needs of our Latina/o/x students. Moreover, given our overall student population, the ideal candidate will demonstrate a commitment to join a department that is dedicated to the use of curriculum and pedagogy that shares SBCC's commitment to educating its racially and socioeconomically diverse post-traditional student population.
Commencing Fall 2026, a full-time tenure track teaching position will be available in the Theatre Arts Department specializing in theatrical scenic and lighting design and technical management of a multi-venue performing arts facility. As assigned, responsibilities include: (1) Teaching classes in stagecraft, scenography, lighting, elementary scenic design, and theatre production. (2) Additional teaching of classes in theatre appreciation, dramatic literature, and/or theatre history. (3) Scenic and Lighting Design and/or design supervision responsibilities for up to six productions per year. (4) With support of a full-time staff technical director, oversee the construction, fabrication, staffing and running of scenery, props and lighting for up to six productions per year. (5) Oversee the design/technical area as a concentration within the A.A. Degree, including, as appropriate, development of additional curricula, identification of Student Learning Outcomes (SLOs), and recruiting and recommending adjunct faculty for the design/technical area. (6) Assist department chair by assuming principal responsibility for overseeing program coordination and technical support for a four hundred seat proscenium theatre and a one hundred seat studio theatre.
The successful candidate will also participate in departmental planning, program evaluation, student recruitment, and liaisons with secondary and four-year institutions, and other routine operations of the Theatre Arts Department, including department chair responsibilities on a rotational basis. Specific assignments will be based upon training, experience, and an assessment of the personal interview.
Other responsibilities include participation in the governance of the college via committee assignments, maintenance of a sufficient number of office hours to meet student needs, involvement in activities designed to improve teaching and particularly the application of technology to the instructional process. The assignment for this position will include teaching evening classes and weekend responsibilities.
SALARY & PERSONNEL BENEFITS
The current salary schedule range for an entering tenure-track faculty member is $74,473 - $116,752 with a PhD bonus of $3,723.65. Depending on the entry step, the faculty member advances one-step each year and has the potential to reach the current maximum step of $148,626, depending on the educational level attained. Starting salary is commensurate with academic preparation and full-time related, paid experience. In addition to salary, each full-time employee participates in a "cafeteria style" health and welfare benefits program.

Has experience or has demonstrated commitment to teaching, mentoring and/or engaging in services for Black and Brown students.
Has demonstrated knowledge of barriers for Black and Brown students and experience in addressing disproportionate impact at an institution.
Has experience in or has demonstrated commitment in facilitating Black and Brown students' navigating a higher education institution.
Has experience or has demonstrated commitment to integrating elements of culturally relevant and inclusive pedagogy.
Ability to update one's skills, keep current with emerging trends in industry and make appropriate program modifications that reflect these trends.
Knowledge of instructional strategies of promoting student learning.
Education and Experience
Candidates must possess the minimum qualifications for the discipline as approved by the California Community Colleges Board of Governors and defined in the Minimum Qualifications for Faculty and Administrators in California Community Colleges handbook.
1. A Master's degree in drama/theater arts/performance, OR
2. A Bachelor's degree in drama/theater arts/performance, AND Master's in comparative literature, English, communication studies, speech, literature or humanities OR the equivalent.
3. Possess a combination of education and experience that is at least the equivalent to all of the above. Candidates making an application on the basis of equivalency must submit an Application for Equivalency in addition to all other required material.
4. Evidence of a sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, culture, disability, gender identity, sexual orientation, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students, faculty and staff.
Knowledge and Abilities
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience in teaching, designing and supervising the scenery and lighting production for plays, including a variety of periods and styles.
- Teaching classes in stagecraft, scenography, lighting, elementary scenic design, and theatre production. Additional teaching of classes in theatre appreciation, dramatic literature, and/or theatre history.
- Experience as a scenic and lighting designer at the college and professional level.
- Ability to work cooperatively with other academic, professional, and support staff as part of a teaching/production team dedicated to the academic, cultural, and professional enrichment of students and the community.
- Demonstrated commitment to teaching theatre both as part of a comprehensive liberal arts curriculum and in the preparation of potential professional artists and technicians.
- Demonstrated experience with development and implementation of student learning outcomes and utilization of results for improvement of student learning.
- Demonstrated experience with using technology and multi-media in delivery of instruction and interaction with students.
- Demonstrated experience with utilization of strategies, techniques and methods that enhance student learning and success and respond to diverse learning styles.
- Experience in working with students from diverse cultural, ethnic, socioeconomic, academic and disability backgrounds.
