Position Number: 00101934

Essential Job Duties:

Faculty members in direct support of the program include individuals board-certified by the American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine and one individual board certified by the American College of Veterinary Pharmacology. Additional members of the Department have expertise in residue pharmacology, food safety, antimicrobial resistance, immunology, epidemiology and government practice as well as with the swine and poultry industries. The residency will provide training appropriate for a career in academia, government, industry, or private specialty practice.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • The primary goal of this 3-year residency program is to provide clinical training that qualifies individuals to sit the certification examination of the American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine (ACVIM). The residency will provide training appropriate for a career in academia, government, industry, or private specialty practice.
  • The majority of the residency will be spent working for the Farm Animal Medicine and Surgery service in the hospital and for the Ruminant Field service to gain clinical experience with small ruminants, beef (cow/calf) and dairy cattle, camelids and companion swine. Clinical training will include individual animal medicine and surgery, herd/flock level medicine and reproduction. Limited opportunities are also available for exposure to other areas, including equine internal medicine, pathology, radiology and others depending on the interest of the candidate.
  • Funding will be available for an external concentrated cattle experience at another institution either within the US or internationally.
  • The resident will be expected to participate in all aspects of the farm animal health management teaching program which includes didactic lectures, seminars, clinical teaching and continuing education. It is anticipated that teaching opportunities will increase with experience.
  • The resident will also be responsible for night and weekend emergency duty for farm animals in the Veterinary Hospital on a rotating basis with the other house officers.
  • Residents participate in didactic training exercises including journal club and boards preparation seminars. The resident will be required to undertake a suitable research project and prepare at least one manuscript suitable for publication during the program.
  • Faculty mentors will help facilitate this requirement. A residency advisor and advisory committee are responsible for the residents' program and progress. Residents will receive semi-annual written evaluations, which will be discussed with the resident's advisory committee.
  • Re-appointment in a successive year is contingent upon satisfactory progress in the program and funding availability.
  • It may be possible for qualified candidates to apply for admission to graduate school to receive additional training and complete a master's level or Ph.D. degree. This would extend the program and would only be feasible based upon finances, availability and candidate qualifications.
  • There are varied research opportunities available depending on the interest of the resident including pharmacology, antimicrobial resistance, immunology, critical care, epidemiology and population health, food safety and toxicology.

Departmental Required Skills:

  • Excellent oral and written English communication skills
  • Demonstrated ability to work in a collaborative, service-oriented, rapidly changing environment to accomplish mutual goals
  • Ability to work independently and effectively across organizational lines and in collaboration with colleagues throughout the organization
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making skills; aptitude for detailed work
  • Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds with or without reasonable accommodations.

Preferred Experience, Skills, Training/Education:

Internship or at least one year of food animal/large animal/mixed animal practice.

Necessary Licenses or Certifications:

Eligibility for veterinary licensure (or faculty licensure) in the State of NC. This can be obtained after successful acceptance into the program through the institutional employment licensing agreement.

A North Carolina Driver's License is required. This must be obtained by the employee within 2 months of employment.
