Position Summary
The Financial Aid Advisor has primary responsibility for advising students and parents on all aspects of the financial aid application process and preparing financial aid packages in accordance with federal, state, and institutional guidelines.

Major Responsibilities
Advising and Counseling
- Provide guidance and counseling to students and parents on all matters pertaining to the financing of their SUNY Cortland education
- Respond to student/family inquiries that are initiated during walk-in visits to the office, via email or phone or other communication
- Manage and maintain a caseload of prospective and current students which includes:
- Reviewing and adjusting records for grade levels
- Reviewing and processing independence override requests and special circumstance appeals
- Running daily reports
- Reviewing applicant enrollment and progression towards degree
Application Processing
- Review and process financial aid applications in a timely and accurate manner
- Determine the financial aid eligibility of prospective and current students, prepare financial aid packages, and ensure compliance with federal state and institutional guidelines
Monitoring and Documentation
- Perform routine financial aid functions necessary to deliver financial aid to students which includes reviewing all flagged FAFSA’s for citizenship, aggregated loan warnings/limits, unusual enrollment, independency and defaulted student loans
- Review student records to ensure accuracy and compliance with financial aid regulations including registration compliance and satisfactory academic progress notifications
- Oversee the administration of an aid program which includes:
- Loading and extracting electronic files
- Originating, awarding, and authorizing payments
- Reconciling, vouchering, and redepositing program funds
Outreach and Education
- Conduct workshops, webinars, and presentations on financial aid topics
- Collaborate with other departments to support enrollment and retention
Functional and Supervisory Relationships
- Reports to the director of financial aid
- Works closely with the other members of the financial aid team
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree
- Demonstrated experience working in an office environment
Preferred Qualifications
- Master’s degree
- Experience working in a financial aid office
- Experience working with a student information system such as Banner, etc.
- Experience utilizing document imaging software such as OnBase, etc.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
- Knowledge, understanding and the ability to interpret federal aid regulations in the administration of student federal aid
- Understanding of needs analysis, student budgets, and federal/state/private aid management
- Strong attention to detail
- Ability to work in a high-volume deadline-driven office environment
- Effective interpersonal skills
- Strong written and oral communication skills
- Strong investigative, problem solving and analytical skills
- Ability to multi-task and prioritize to meet critical deadlines
- Ability to work independently and with a team
- Strong critical thinking skills
