JOB DESCRIPTION:
The position provides counseling services to students and parents regarding the application process for obtaining federal, state, private, and institutional sources of financial assistance. The position requires that counseling be performed in a variety of media—in person, by telephone, and by e-mail. Other responsibilities include monitoring individual student eligibility for aid awarded under specific programs and regulations; verifying the accuracy of information submitted by students on the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA); certifying the eligibility and processing of funds for federal and private loan programs; assisting in identifying all sources of financial assistance for which a student may qualify to continue enrollment at the University, and communicating with students with respect to issues or conditions that may harm their continued eligibility to receive financial assistance. Work in a professional and congenial manner within the Financial Aid Office, within the university, and in representing Southern University and A&M College externally.
JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Counsel students and their parents concerning eligibility for federal, state, institutional, and private student financial aid programs
- Interpret and explain financial aid regulations, resolve simple and complex problems, and offer information about financial aid options
- Provide excellent customer service during walk-in visits and appointments and via letter, telephone, and e-mail
- Stay abreast of industry changes by reading NASFAA News and LASFAA listserv messages
- Provide front-desk coverage as necessary to ensure telephone and walk-in coverage
- Attend state and federal workshops and conferences
SPECIFIC QUALIFICATIONS:
- Bachelor's degree from a regionally accredited institution.
- 0-5 years of experience
- Customer Service, FERPA Knowledge
