Financial Aid Officer Senior

The University of Michigan Medical School seeks a detail-oriented and student-focused Financial Aid Officer Senior to join the Office of Medical Student Education. This role provides comprehensive financial aid services to medical students, including advising on policies and procedures, managing aid packaging, and supporting debt counseling initiatives. Responsibilities include reviewing and interpreting complex financial documentation, exercising professional judgment in unique cases, and ensuring compliance with federal, state, and institutional regulations. The position supports the application of medical school scholarships and institutional aid programs, performs reconciliation and reporting, and partners with campus offices to resolve aid-related issues. Additionally, the Financial Aid Officer Senior coordinates financial wellness programming and conducts individualized debt management sessions for graduating students. The ideal candidate demonstrates strong analytical skills, proficiency with financial aid systems, and a commitment to delivering exceptional student service. 

Financial Aid Advising

  • Advise students on financial aid policies and procedures via timely email response, appointments, presentations, and new communication platforms as they arise.
  • Maintain thorough knowledge of legislation and regulations governing financial aid programs, need analysis methodology, federal and state tax laws and office policies and procedures.
  • Maintain complete working knowledge of policies and procedures of the University as a whole to provide a comprehensive student service network.

Financial Aid Packaging

  • Review application documents (including comprehensive family financial statements, federal tax returns, and additional supporting material) containing confidential information for accuracy and completeness. Request additional information where necessary and interpret for use in need analysis.
  • Exercise professional judgment, in the resolution of complex, unusual and mitigating student situations.
  • Maintain thorough knowledge of financial aid need analysis and packaging software(s).
  • Utilize the existing University mainframe systems and/or client server software, any supporting applications, and OFA Network applications and software for the accurate and timely completion of file review and packaging.
  • Partner with the U-M Office of Financial Aid to troubleshoot packaging issues, error reports, and other factors impacting aid disbursement and reconciliation.

Grants, Scholarship, & Institutional Aid Management

  • Maintain, update and report on UMMS scholarship portfolio, including funds balance, planned disbursements, student assignments and donor intent.
  • Work with Medical School Financial Aid Director to review need-based grant awards and other medical school specific financial aid funds (ie emergency grants, travel grants).
  • Work with Medical School Financial Aid Director to package approved applications for institutional aid.
  • Perform direct reconciliation on annual basis, as supported by regular upkeep of monthly processes.
  • Maintain thorough knowledge of university mainframe systems and/or client server software, any supporting applications, and OFA Network applications and software for the accurate and timely completion of processing and reporting assignments.
  • Seek counsel from and provide information to central campus partners as needed.

Debt Counseling

  • Act as a general resource for unit partners, provide back-up support and feedback for the office and unit.
  • Other duties as assigned.
  • Conduct individual in-depth debt management sessions with graduating medical students.
  • Advise graduates on loan repayment and consolidation
  • Coordinate medical student programs related to debt management and financial wellness

General Unit Support

  • Act as a general resource for unit partners, provide back-up support and feedback for the office and unit.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree.
  • Three-to-four years of applicable experience required; financial aid and higher education experience preferred.
  • Experience advising and providing services to students. Past work with collegiate or professional school students preferred.
  • Experience interpreting policies, procedures, and regulations while managing confidential information required.
  • Ability to track and meet system deadlines, respond in timely and professional manner to stakeholders, and follow-up on unresolved issues.
  • Excellent office technology skills, maintained by regular professional/skill development routine.
  • This position is non-exempt under FLSA.
