South Dakota State University is looking for a Finance and Budget Specialist to join our Finance and Budget team. In this role, you will assist the other Financial and Budget Analysts in analyzing, changing, and finalizing the SDSU Operating Budget, with particular emphasis on the personnel service portion of the budget. This position is located in Brookings, South Dakota. This position is a 12-month, full-time, benefits-eligible position.

This position is an internal posting and is eligible to all current, permanent, full-time employees of South Dakota State University.

The Division of Finance & Budget provides strategic leadership and operational support for the university’s financial health. Its mission is to ensure responsible fiscal practices, optimize resource allocation, and maintain compliance with state and institutional policies.

Must be authorized to work in the U.S. Sponsorship is not available for this position.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Provide leadership and management of budget related processes
  • Assist with university budget management including personnel services budget management
  • Develop and deliver reports and decision-support tools that enable campus leadership and stakeholders to evaluate financial strategies

QUALIFICATIONS

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor’s degree completed by date of hire
  • At least five years of experience in higher education, finance, budget, accounting (including grants & contracts accounting), human resources, payroll or a related field
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Strong customer service orientation
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Extensive knowledge of university budgetary procedures
  • Experience providing guidance, work direction, and training to others
  • Demonstrated advanced knowledge of Microsoft Excel including Pivot Tables or other similar advanced tools
  • Demonstrated proficiency with university data systems, processes, and procedures

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor’s degree preferably in Finance, Business, Accounting, Economics, or a related field by date of hire
  • Knowledge of LEAN principles or other process improvement experience
