Position Highlights

The University is looking for a Fire Systems Inspector. This position conducts moderately complex fire and life safety inspections, code compliance activities, and fire prevention duties across the university. Working under general supervision, the inspector independently evaluates a wide range of occupancies and fire protection systems, interprets applicable fire codes, and issues corrective actions to ensure all required inspections are completed and documented in accordance with adopted codes and standards. The role provides skilled evaluation of hazards, offers code guidance, and supports construction projects, system reviews, and campus fire safety programs through professional recommendations. The inspector also assists with building user training and serves as a subject matter resource for departments and campus partners. This position demonstrates sound judgment, strong technical knowledge, and effective prioritization of work. The role may assist senior inspectors with complex inspections, plan reviews, investigations, or special events and works toward advanced fire certifications.

This position requires evening, weekend, overtime work and be required to work out of town.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Independently conducts routine and moderately complex inspections of academic buildings, residence halls, laboratories, assembly spaces, and support facilities. Inspect fire alarm systems, sprinkler systems, extinguishers, egress components, special suppression systems, and related fire safety features to verify that equipment and systems are installed, maintained, and operated in accordance with applicable codes and standards.
  • Identifies violations and hazards; issues corrective actions and ensures follow up by communicating deficiencies and recommended corrections to the Fire Inspector Lead or Fire Services Supervisor for review and follow up. For life threating issues, also notify the appropriate Authority Having Jurisdiction (AHJ), such as EHS, immediately.
  • Documents inspection findings thoroughly and accurately in department systems to maintain reliable records that can be used for regulatory and programmatic follow up.
  • Performs re-inspections to confirm compliance with corrective measures.
  • Interprets fire and life safety codes and provides explanations to campus users, contractors, and project managers, focusing on how code requirements apply to fire protection systems, devices, and field conditions.
  • Assists with plan review tasks for small scale projects or minor system modifications under the guidance and direction of the Fire Inspector Lead or Fire Services Supervisor.
  • Supports enforcement actions and helps develop recommended compliance pathways.
  • Researches code questions and helps to maintain technical reference materials.
  • Serves as a resource and mentor to vendor support team staff by providing field guidance for code compliance and inspection support.
  • Participates in departmental meetings, program development, and process improvements by sharing observations and fact-based opinions from professional and field experience.
  • Provides support for fire drills, emergency response, and fire alarm events as trained by certifying agencies, NFPA standards, and by your management team.
  • Assists with special event inspections (tents, stages, large gatherings, temporary wiring) to evaluate fire risks and egress conditions from a fire code basis using your professional knowledge and experience.
  • Helps deliver fire safety education and outreach programs by explaining how campus fire protection systems operate and how occupants should interact with those systems.
  • May support fire investigations under direction of senior staff per NFPA 1321 standard requirements to include retrieving, interpreting, and explaining relevant fire system data such as alarm histories, panel logs, and device performance to both learn from directed experience and gain confidence in the process and procedures.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

  • Excellent attention to detail and a drive to complete all work on time and on budget.
  • Ability to follow detailed procedures and ensure accuracy in documentation and routine details.
  • Strong communication skills.
  • Proficiency with computer skills, MS Excel, and email.
  • Strong customer service skills and communications.
  • Familiarity with NFPA (National Fire Protection Association) and local codes.
  • Ability to read and interpret code related requirements in documents such as University of Arizona codes, ordinances adopted fire codes and standards, reports, plans and other documents.
  • Ability to perform math calculations such as addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, algebra, fire flow, fire protection systems, plans, review occupancy load and egress locations determined by calculations and formulas including equations, geometry, algebra, powers, and volume measurements and hydraulic calculations.
  • Ability to write clearly organized documents.
  • Ability to manage stressful and negative interactions with high levels of tact and excellent interpersonal skills.

Minimum Qualifications

  • High school diploma or high school diploma equivalency is required.
  • In addition to the education and experience minimum qualifications, Apprenticeship program, technical training experience required.
  • Three years of relevant experience, or equivalent combination of education and work experience.
  • Must have a valid driver's license and ability to drive according to the University Fleet Safety Policy.
