Job Description

Under the direct supervision of the Grounds Manager, this role coordinates and performs the collection of garbage and recyclable materials from designated campus areas. The primary focus of this position is to ensure solid waste and recyclables are managed appropriately to keep the campus safe and attractive.

Essential Job Functions and Responsibilities: Employment duties include, but are not limited to:

  • Perform daily and routine tasks in the management of solid waste and recyclable materials
  • Operate utility vehicles with trailers to transport materials across campus to designated disposal areas. May operate general groundskeeping equipment and other handheld power tools used in the grounds maintenance industry. This requires the ability to stand, walk, crouch, and bend for extended periods of time and have dexterity with arms and hands.
  • Operate trash compactors and cardboard bailers according to safe work practices
  • Inspect and maintain equipment and machines following a preventive maintenance program
  • Remove cardboard and other recyclable materials from buildings. Must be able to lift 50 pounds independently, and heavier loads with a helper.
  • Support special events on campus with trash and recycling removal
  • Coordinate and supervise student employees in the work study program; provide training and adequate supervision to ensure assigns tasks are completed on-time and in a safe manner
  • Promote campus recycling efforts among students, faculty, staff, and guests; recommend policy implementation; recommend placement of trash and recycling bins throughout campus to improve effectiveness of recycling initiatives
  • Support on-the-job training of newly hired staff members
  • Maintain an effective working relationships, both inter and intra-departmentally
  • Respond to work orders, remedy problems, and keep constituents informed in a timely manner
  • Effectively plan and perform in a multi-task environment and meet self or pre-imposed objectives and deadlines as well as exercise the use of independent judgement
  • Assist in the oversight of outside vendors and contractors to ensure their compliance with contractual obligations and the university's standards of quality
  • Perform general groundskeeping duties when necessary to assist the larger team as requested by manager
  • Perform other duties as assigned

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: The knowledge, skills, and abilities for this role include:

  • Ability to understand and carry out written and oral instructions in English and to perform routine duties without immediate supervision
  • Knowledge of local requirements for trash and recycling disposal and best practices for managing campus waste stream
  • Ability to operate vehicles with trailers, compactors and bailers, and other groundskeeping equipment
  • Ability to apply recognized standards of good practice relevant to matters of safety, security, and grounds maintenance techniques
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers, students, and the university community
  • Ability to walk extensively outdoors, over rough or uneven surfaces, bend, stoop, climb, crouch, reach, and so forth
  • Ability to work for extended periods of time in environments with extreme temperature and humidity common in Florida and may work in buildings without air conditioning, heating, or other comforts. May work in areas that are dusty, noisy, and areas that may have unpleasant odors

Required Qualifications: This position requires:

  • High school diploma or GED preferred
  • One (1) year of related experience in waste management or grounds maintenance utilizing equipment similar to what will be used in this job

Must possess and maintain a valid driver's license and an acceptable driving record as determined by the University's auto insurance carrier.

Work authorization sponsorship may be available for this position. However, sponsorship is contingent upon the non-applicability of the visa petition fees outlined in the relevant Executive Order signed September 19, 2025. Due to the recent federally-mandated increased financial expense, the university is not in a position to absorb this significantly increased cost of sponsorship for new H-1B petitions at this time.
