FOIA Compliance Specialist Associate

The Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) Office team works in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment that requires attention to detail and critical thinking skills. Members of this team manage sensitive information that requires working with a high level of confidentiality.

The Compliance Specialist Associate is an entry-level position that reports to the Chief FOIA Officer within the Office of the Vice President for Communications. In this role, the preferred candidate will have the ability to develop professional skills while performing data entry, records management, and routine communications associated with a high volume of requests for documents concerning University of Michigan business. You will assist more senior members of the FOIA team with examination of records and reporting requirements. Primary activities and decision-making are predominantly performed independently.

  • Interpret and assist with document requests as allowed through the FOIA process.
  • Data entry and records management associated with all requests.
  • Use project management skills to prioritize, initiate, and complete tasks.
  • Use analytical skills to assist with the organization and examination of records.
  • Analyze documents to identify compliant courses of action.
  • Work independently with tight deadlines and adapt to changes.
  • Communicate effectively with team members and constituents regarding FOIA requests.

One or more years of administrative or paralegal experience in a complex or legal organization.

Proficiency working with electronic records.

Bachelor's degree or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Basic to intermediate knowledge and application of project management skills.

Ability to quickly learn, understand, and apply rationales that conform to legal requirements.

Strong written and verbal communication skills.

Proven ability to work in a high-pressure environment with accuracy.

New hires are typically hired into the lower portion of the range, enabling employee growth in the range over time. Actual placement in the range is based on job-related skills and experience, as evaluated throughout the interview process. A higher salary is possible for exceptionally qualified candidates.
