Located in the heart of California between San Jose and Monterey, Gavilan College's main campus in Gilroy serves a diverse student population in a beautiful South Bay community with deep agricultural roots. In addition, we offer a variety of courses at our new full-service, state-of-the art Hollister campus as well as specialized programs at our San Martin and South San Jose locations. As a Hispanic Serving Institution with a 60% Latinx student population, we are committed to achieving educational equity for all students. We work to provide students with a rich and relevant learning experience that emphasizes student engagement in and out of the classroom, encouraging students of all ethnic and socioeconomic backgrounds to realize their goals and become socially responsible leaders. Gavilan College fosters justice, equity, diversity, and inclusion through its Principles of Community. As a member of our community, you will join us in valuing the worth and dignity of every person, the pursuit of truth, devotion to excellence, and the principles of democratic citizenship. When you join our team at Gavilan College, you will become part of an innovative and equity-focused community that approaches higher education as a matter of social justice requiring broad collaboration among faculty, staff, administration, students, and community partners.
The Position:
Gavilan College seeks qualified applicants for a full-time, tenure-track faculty position in Studio Art. The successful candidate will have the skills to teach a broad range of two-dimensional (2D) art courses, which may include foundations in design and color, drawing, painting, graphic design, figure drawing, mural painting and public art, mixed media, and, depending on expertise, art history. We seek an excellent instructor who is also an effective communicator and collaborative program leader; someone who can support program and facility operations, contribute to strategic growth and sustainability, and foster student success.
- The Art program at Gavilan College consists of 2D and 3D design, drawing, painting, graphic arts, photography, ceramics, sculpture, figure drawing, art for childhood development, digital media, and art history.
- The 2D art facilities include a painting and drawing studio and access to a digital lab as well as a large gallery space for professional and student exhibitions.
- The tenure-track faculty member will be supported by a tenured 3D instructor, part-time faculty, and a Studio Art technician.
- With an average of 70 art and art history courses offered annually, Gavilan College's Art program enjoys consistently high enrollment of a diverse mix of transfer students, students from other degree programs, and community skill-builders.
Ideal Candidate:
Gavilan College is committed to recruiting individuals that embody our Principles of Community by:
- actively demonstrating a commitment to understanding and serving community college students who are diverse in socioeconomics, culture, ability, age, and ethnicity;
- committing to collaboration, effective communication and the development of strong working relationships;
- promoting purposeful inclusion of all groups and the free exchange of ideas in a respectful, trusting and considerate environment; and
- prioritize equity in developing and strengthening curriculum, programs, and student support services.
The ideal candidate for this position is an educator who actively embraces building a Studio Art program to serve populations historically underrepresented and underserved in higher education. With knowledge of both the strengths embodied by our diverse students and the barriers they face, the ideal candidate is well-poised to teach, support, and mentor Gavilan students. The ideal candidate desires connection with students and the community beyond the classroom and works to foster cross-cultural and anti-racist collaboration whether through creating research, scholarship, media, art, or cultural/political engagement opportunities. In joining Gavilan College, the ideal candidate thrives as a faculty member continually striving to employ anti-racist pedagogy and develop success strategies to meet the needs of historically underserved students.
- Teach 14-16 lecture-equivalent hours per semester, which will include in-person instruction at the Hollister and Gilroy campuses as well as online teaching; may include evening and weekends. May also include teaching Dual Enrollment (high school) and/or Higher Aspirations (justice impacted) program courses, as needed.
- Create inclusive, student-centered learning environments that support the growth and success of diverse learners through thoughtful course preparation, effective teaching methodologies, and meaningful feedback.
- Cultivate relationships with students to support their growth through office hours and regular interaction (both in person and online).
- Create, assess, and update curriculum to meet the needs of diverse students in all modalities.
- Actively engage in department and division meetings, events, and initiatives.
- Contribute to campus committees and decision-making processes that support the college's mission and goals.
- Participate in ongoing professional learning, particularly around anti-racism, diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility.
- Adhere to department, division, and district policies and procedures for faculty employees.
- Evaluate student work using clear criteria relevant to the course content and student learning outcomes and provide feedback to students in a timely manner.
- Develop and implement a variety of effective teaching and assessment methods including the use of computers and information technology to engage student interest and support for a variety of learning styles
- Develop effective online course materials and build online learning communities that meet accessible online course requirements and Title 5 §55211 Effective Contact Policy requirements.
- Maintain and submit accurate records according to published deadlines (i.e., grades, syllabi, attendance reports).
- Continue in related professional career development throughout employment and remain current in the field through course work, conferences, workshops and other appropriate means.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
