Job Description Summary:
The Department of Pediatrics, Division of Genetics at the University of Kansas School of Medicine-Wichita is seeking a genetic counselor for a full-time faculty position. The genetic counselor will join a team of one medical geneticist, genetic counselor, an advance practice nurse, a dietician, and dedicated nurse. The genetic counselor will support a full scope of genetics practice to include perinatal, metabolism, and general genetics. This is a clinical position where the genetic counselor will see patients independently as well as with support of our medical geneticist, maternal fetal medicine, neonatology, and other physicians. This is an exciting opportunity to help us lead the development of a comprehensive genetic service line that will serve Central and Western Kansas.
The position is offered with academic appointment to the medical school and the successful candidate will have the opportunity to provide education to diverse learners, including medical students and residents in multiple disciplines.
There is also a future opportunity for dual appointment with the University of Kansas genetic counseling master's program in Kansas City. The program will be accepting students in fall of 2024. The positions with work with genetic counseling students as well as have potential to teach remotely.

Job Description:
Minimum Qualifications
- Masters in Genetic Counseling
- Board eligible/certified by the American Board of Genetic Counseling (ABGC)
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience teaching in an academic setting
- Experience in pediatrics, prenatal and/or general clinical genetics
- Ability to speak, read, and understand Spanish
Essential Functions
Clinical - 90%
- Performs genetic counseling in accordance with the American Board of Genetic Counseling Genetic Counselors' Scope of Practice guidelines
- Work collaboratively with referring and consulting physicians to provide genetic counseling for patients with a wide range of indications in ambulator and hospital settings
- Determine optimal genetic testing strategy
- Report results to patient and referring provider
- Complete documentation of the patient visit including summary letters to patients and referring physicians in a timely manner.
- Coordinate the care and neonatal follow up of pregnancies with identified anomalies/genetic conditions.
- Coordinate multidisciplinary prenatal care conference for complex maternal-fetal patients
- Medical journal publications and outreach education are encouraged, as well as maintenance of current CEU requirements
Education - 10%
- Participate in education of students and residents in medicine and allied health care professions
- Designs educational materials and genetic testing protocols for collaborating disciplines, such as pediatric specialties and obstetrics/gynecology.
- Presents educational sessions to schools, consumer groups, and the public
- Instruct patients/families/medical personnel in field of genetics.
