Regular Faculty work under the direction of their respective Associate Dean/Division Dean and are responsible for meeting all scheduled classes/labs/clinics and providing instruction in accordance with the philosophy and objectives of the College and the Department Chair's approved course outline. Regular Faculty are also responsible for using teaching methods and media designed to reach students of varying educational and experiential backgrounds to allow each student the opportunity to master the objectives of the course.
This position will serve as Department Co-Chair. Chairs will work under the direction of the Division Dean/Associate Deans and shall assist by providing leadership in curriculum and instruction, and by supervising adjunct instructors and programs as assigned by the Dean. Chairs are responsible for all aspects of the program including organization, administration, accreditation, continuous review, planning, development and general effectiveness of the program. Chairs are members of regular faculty of the college and as such, teaching remains the primary responsibility.
Regular Faculty are required to serve a provisional period from the date of employment until the completion of employment under three consecutive full year regular contracts.
This position may require working in virtual, weekend, evening, or various campus locations. Successful candidate must be willing to teach concurrent enrollment both on PPSC campuses and in local area high schools.
The required teaching schedule is August to May. The required pay schedule is September to August.
Minimum Qualifications
- Completed Master's degree in Geology, OR completed Master’s degree in any discipline area with a minimum of 18 graduate credit hours in geology-related courses that provide a foundation in the specific subject matter being taught. (Accepted Discipline Areas: Environmental Geology, Engineering Geology, Geotechnical Geology, Geosciences, and others, as determined by CV and transcript review.) Please submit unofficial transcripts.
- Four semesters of teaching experience at the college level.
- Demonstrated ability to work with underrepresented populations in successful efforts to close the achievement gap.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience teaching college geology within the past five years.
- Demonstrated ability and willingness to teach in related geosciences disciplines such as geography, meteorology, and environmental sciences.
- Demonstrated experience with and passion for field work in geosciences and sharing these experiences with others.
- Experience in curriculum or course design and development for geoscience courses.
- Demonstrated understanding of current theories, methods, and approaches in the teaching of geoscience courses.
- Experience using various technologies for classroom instruction, to include experience developing and teaching online and/or hybrid courses using a course management system.
- Demonstrated experience and/or willingness to serve as a department chair or co-chair as needed.
- Demonstrated experience and interest in serving as a faculty sponsor for student-led academic clubs or other co-curricular activities.
- Demonstrated success working individually with students in and out of the classroom.
- Demonstrated success in working with students of diverse backgrounds and abilities.
- Ability to read, write, and speak fluent Spanish.
