Description
In some of our largest classes (with often over 100 students enrolled) we employ a Graduate Assistant to help with classroom learning and management. Graduate students assist with activities, presentations, attendance-taking, testing, grading and other student assignments. Graduate Assistants in these courses enable us to include an emphasis of writing where it would otherwise be impossible. Also, the Teaching Assistantship allows advanced students who are eager to pursue teaching careers to earn and be mentored in effective teaching. Finally, graduate students provide service to the university on committees, take classes, and become alumni. The Graduate Assistants will devote five hours of their time to maintaining a current internship/jobs list for undergraduate and graduate students and updating that list every two weeks. The student would monitor weekly any internships/jobs posted at the Organization of American Historians, National Council on Public History, American Association for State and Local History, Missouri State Jobs, and municipal job websites. The person would also be responsible for planning, in consultation with the Graduate Director, a fall internship professional development session for undergraduate and graduate students on how to uncover jobs and internships.

Scholarship: Students filling a Graduate Assistantship (GA) position are eligible to receive a graduate tuition waiver, a graduate non-resident tuition waiver (if applicable), and a graduate mandatory fees waiver. The scholarships are in the form of a waiver and the funds are not deposited into the student's personal account. Instead, the student's bill is reduced by the amount of the scholarship awarded. If the maximum amount of the scholarship is not used, the remainder is not paid to the student in any form and unused scholarship money cannot be carried over to another semester. The scholarship is applied to graduate level courses only; courses taken for undergraduate credit are not eligible to be covered by the GA scholarship. The non-resident fee scholarship only applies to classes taken on the UCM Warrensburg campus. The maximum scholarship amounts are based on the size of assistantship held. For a full (20-hour per week) assistantship, the scholarship covers tuition costs and mandatory fees up to 12 credit hours of graduate coursework per semester. Graduate assistantship positions less than full will be prorated accordingly.
