About the opportunity

The Head of Maintenance provides strategic and institutional stewardship of the University’s built environment, ensuring the safe, reliable, and sustainable operation of all physical infrastructure across multiple campuses. As a key senior leader within the Facilities Management portfolio, the position holds University wide responsibility for the strategic direction, governance, and performance of maintenance operations, supporting teaching, research, and operational objectives.

This role leads the planning, prioritisation, and optimisation of all maintenance services—including reactive, planned, preventive, predictive, statutory, lifecycle, minor non permit works, and asset renewal programs—ensuring delivery in accordance with legislative requirements, risk frameworks, and long term asset management strategies. The Head of Maintenance provides authoritative oversight of building maintenance, minor refresh and renovation works, in house trade services, and a complex ecosystem of contracted providers, ensuring high levels of quality, safety, and operational resilience.

What you’ll do:

Provide authoritative, timely, and strategic advice to senior leaders on complex matters relating to building operations, facilities management, asset stewardship, and the delivery of Campus Services, ensuring alignment with University wide priorities, risk frameworks, and legislative obligations.

Foster a high performance safety culture by embedding WHS best practice into daily operations, ensuring compliance with statutory obligations, and leading WHS risk mitigation across maintenance and contractor activities.

Provide senior leadership for maintenance, facilities management and contracted services programs and functions to ensure programs are strategically planned, executed, and continuously optimised to deliver high-quality, reliable, and customer focused outcomes across all campuses.

High-level collaboration with the Laboratory, Clinic and Technical Managers to ensure an effective and integrated approach to service delivery.

Coordinate forward works planning of infrastructure and other areas of the asset portfolio requirements to ensure effective and efficient utilisation of facilities and alignment with overarching University infrastructure plans.

Provide strategic leadership, supervision, and capability development for maintenance and technical staff, fostering a culture of safety, accountability, and continuous improvement.

Lead and monitor maintenance processes to ensure that all contracted and inhouse maintenance activities comply with legislative requirements, industry standards, and University risk management processes, including critical infrastructure and safety obligations.

What we’re looking for:

Demonstrated experience in the leading and governing complex building and facilities operations across large, multisite environments, including the delivery of strategic maintenance, asset stewardship, and operational support services.

Exceptional interpersonal, negotiation, and influencing skills, with demonstrated ability to build effective relationships with stakeholders, manage competing priorities, and lead collaborative, cross institutional initiatives.

Proven expertise in procuring, contracting, and managing highvalue external service providers, ensuring strong commercial performance, governance, compliance, and continuous service improvement.

Comprehensive knowledge of relevant legislation, building codes, standards, and regulatory frameworks, with demonstrated capability in applying this expertise to govern risk, ensure compliance, and maintain safe and resilient infrastructure.

Proficiency in creating and managing budgets, tracking expenses, and making cost-effective decisions while maintaining facilities to a high standard.

Aligning facilities management with the University strategic goals (SAMP/AMP) and contributing to its success and growth.

Proven leadership in developing and managing high performing teams, fostering technical excellence, capability uplift, safety culture, and continuous improvement across diverse professional and trade groups.
