Description

Overview:

The Hospitalist Program at Johns Hopkins Hospital is a group of more than 50 faculty, 12-14 APP, and 5-6 support staff embedded within the Department of Medicine. The group’s mission includes patient care, education, research, and clinical administration.

Hospitalist Program: Scope of Clinical Activities

The group’s current clinical activities include: Direct care services, a hospitalist-run Resident-covered general medical service (“Brancati Service”), Consultative activities (Consult service), Comanagement services (Orthopedic Surgery Co-management and Oncology Solid Tumor Co-management), Medicine Progressive Care Unit (“MPC”), Flex hospitalist program, and Hopkins Access Line coverage. The Hospitalist Unit and Brancati Service, combined, carry up to 90 inpatients at a time. Some faculty also participate in clinical activities that are not under direct supervision of the Hospitalist Program, including Pediatrics and the Osler Firms. Additional clinical services are currently being explored (including neurology IMC co-management and creation of a short stay unit) and may be deployed within the next year. The Hospitalist Program employs support staff (hospitalist administrators, a nurse practitioner to expedite care, and medical office coordinators) and also employs moonlighters (faculty, residents and fellows) to support some clinical activities.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Patient Care:
    • Provide comprehensive medical care for hospitalized patients, including admission, diagnosis, treatment, and discharge planning.
    • Monitor patients' progress, adjust treatments, and ensure appropriate follow-up care post-discharge.
    • Conduct daily rounds to assess patients’ conditions and update their treatment plans.
    • Make timely, evidence-based decisions regarding patient care and treatment plans.
    • Respond to clinical emergencies, assist in critical care situations, and ensure the safety and comfort of patients.
  • Collaboration:
    • Work closely with other attending physicians, specialists, nurses, and other members of the healthcare team to provide coordinated care.
    • Communicate effectively with patients and families, providing education on diagnoses, treatment options, and care plans.
  • Documentation and Compliance:
    • Ensure accurate and timely documentation of patient care activities in the electronic health record (EHR).
    • Adhere to hospital policies and regulatory requirements, including quality improvement initiatives, infection control, and safety protocols.
  • Quality Improvement:
    • Participate in departmental quality improvement projects and initiatives aimed at enhancing patient care, safety, and satisfaction.
    • Contribute to the development and implementation of clinical guidelines and best practices.
  • Education and Mentorship:
    • Provide education to residents, interns, and medical students during clinical rounds and other settings.
    • Engage in continuous professional development and training.

Additional clinical service expectations:

  1. Meet the productivity and performance expectations on each of the clinical services
  2. Provide clinical feedback and administrative feedback to Hospitalist leadership team as needed
  3. May be required to share administrator-on-call duties with other leaders in the group

Qualifications

  • Education:
    • Doctor of Medicine (MD) or Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (DO) degree from an accredited medical school.
  • Licensure:
    • Board certified or board eligible in Internal Medicine or Family Medicine.
    • Active medical license in the state of Maryland.
  • Certifications:
    • BLS (Basic Life Support) and ACLS (Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support) certification required.
    • Additional certifications, such as Advanced Trauma Life Support (ATLS), preferred.
