Murdoch University is seeking to appoint a number of external members across categories required under the National Statement, including:
- People with knowledge of, and current experience in, professional care, counselling or treatment of people (e.g. nurse, medical doctor or allied health professional)
- A person who performs a pastoral care role in the community, such as a chaplain or minister
- A qualified lawyer (practising or non-practising)
- A person who brings a broader community or consumer perspective

About the Committee
The Murdoch University Human Research Ethics Committee (HREC) reviews human research projects to ensure they are ethically acceptable and conducted in accordance with the National Statement on Ethical Conduct in Human Research (2023), the Australian Code for the Responsible Conduct of Research, relevant legislation and Murdoch University policies.
Members should possess:
- Strong communication and collaborative skills and the ability to consider diverse perspectives
- An interest in ethics and the ability to engage with ethical issues
- Capacity to commit sufficient time to meeting preparation and attendance as well as out of session reviews
- Ability to maintain confidentiality and appropriately manage conflicts of interest
Term of Appointment
Appointments are typically for a three-year term, with the possibility of reappointment subject to Committee requirements and member interest.
Expected Time Commitment
The HREC meets on Tuesdays (in person) approximately 11 times per year, with meetings generally held monthly for approximately three hours commencing at 2.00 pm. Members are required to review applications and supporting documentation prior to meetings and may occasionally undertake out-of-session reviews.
Remuneration
Members receive remuneration of $300 per meeting. This includes activities related to the meeting, including review of applications prior to the meeting, attendance at the meeting and review of responses to conditions, where required.
