Position Overview
Position Summary
Winston-Salem State University (WSSU) is seeking a dynamic and highly skilled Human Resources Generalist to deliver comprehensive HR services across talent acquisition, position management, benefits administration, and HR systems support. This role is responsible for managing the full recruitment lifecycle for staff, temporary employees, and Federal Work-Study (FWS) students while ensuring full compliance with university, state, and federal regulations.
The HR Generalist serves as a key member in classification and compensation reviews, including SHRA to EHRA conversions, FLSA determinations, and market analyses to promote pay equity and competitiveness. Additionally, this position partners closely with the UNC System Benefits Shared Services Center to support employee benefits administration and leads campus-wide benefits education and outreach.
HR Generalist provides training, troubleshooting, and system leadership to ensure data integrity, optimize workflows, and support informed decision-making for the People Admin System. This role plays a vital part in strengthening WSSU’s HR operations, enhancing employee experience, and supporting the university’s mission through operational excellence and continuous improvement.
Key Responsibilities
Talent Acquisition & Hiring Support (30%)
- Manage the full life cycle of recruitment for staff, temporary employees, and Federal Work-Study students.
- Oversee job postings, applicant screening, background checks, education verifications, and onboarding documentation.
- Coordinate and verify Form I-9 and E-Verify compliance.
- Serve as the campus trainer for search committees, ensuring equitable and compliant hiring practices.
- Prepare job offers and hiring proposals, including salary reviews and exception approvals.
- Counsel employees on career mobility and support departments with workforce planning.
- Track recruitment metrics (time-to-fill, applicant flow, offer acceptance rates).
- Promote WSSU’s employment brand and participate in orientation and engagement initiatives.
- Maintain accurate personnel, applicant, and affirmative action records.
Position & Classification Management (30%)
- Process budgetary and non-budgetary position actions.
- Lead classification conversion processes
- Conduct job analyses, desk audits, and JCAT reviews.
- Perform classification, compensation, and FLSA status reviews.
- Advise departments on pay structures, career banding, and workforce design.
- Maintain position data across Banner, PeopleAdmin, DataMart, Comp Database, PRISM and WebFOCUS.
- Lead classification and compensation studies and audits.
Benefits Administration (15%)
- Serve as the primary campus liaison to the UNC System Benefits Shared Services Center.
- Administer benefits enrollments and lead benefits fairs, vendor days, and benefits education sessions.
- Provide on-site and virtual employee support for benefits-related services.
PeopleAdmin System Administration (10%)
- Provide training, troubleshooting, and user support.
- Coordinate system upgrades with IT and vendors.
- Ensure workflows align with policy and regulatory requirements.
Data Administration & HR Service Requests (10%)
- Generate institutional HR reports and dashboards.
- Maintain HRIS data integrity.
- Manage HR ticketing system requests.
- Process Personnel Action Forms (PAFs).
- Analyze service trends to improve HR processes and communication.
Other Duties (5%)
- Participate in special HR projects and campus initiatives.
- Assist with HR communications and website updates.
- Provide cross-functional HR support as needed.
- Support operational and strategic HR objectives.

Requirements and Preferences
Department Required Skills
- Bachelor’s degree in Human Resources, Business Administration, or a related field; and 2-3 years of Human Resources experience or equivalent combination of education and HR experience.
- Strong understanding of HR principles, employment law, and HRIS systems.
- Ability to maintain confidentiality, demonstrate professionalism, and exercise good judgment.
- Excellent communication, interpersonal, and problem-solving skills.
- Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities.
Preferred Years Experience, Skills, Training, Education
- 4 – 5 years’ related experience of Human Resources
- Experience in a higher education or public sector HR environment.
- Familiarity with HR systems such as PeopleAdmin, Banner, or equivalent platforms.
- Experience conducting training sessions and leading system implementations or enhancements.
- Experience managing HR service ticketing systems or similar platforms.
- Experience in position management processes, including SHRA to EHRA conversions.
- Experience managing temporary and federal work-study student employment.
- Professional HR certification (e.g., PHR, SHRM-CP) is highly desirable.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
- Attention to detail and ability to maintain confidentiality.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office suite and familiarity with HRIS systems (experience with specific systems is a plus).
- Understanding HR principles, laws, and regulations (training or coursework in HR is beneficial).
- Ability to work effectively in a team environment and manage multiple priorities.
