HVAC Mechanic 3
Job Summary
Performs maintenance and service repairs on heating, ventilating, and air conditioning systems. Installs new units or replacement parts for existing units according to specifications and established safety guidelines. Follows blueprints or engineering specifications to install units. Performs troubleshooting to identify the cause of problems. Maintains and secures a spare parts inventory. Recommends purchasing maintenance equipment and supplies as required to improve processes and efficiencies. Typically requires an apprenticeship and/or completion of technical training. Requires a high school diploma. The regulations governing the location may require an HVAC Mechanical State License and EPA Section 608 Certification (CFC). Typically reports to a supervisor or manager.
Works under moderate supervision. Gaining or has attained full proficiency in a specific area of discipline.
Responsibilities
The job duties include, but are not limited to:
- Under limited supervision, responsible for performing complex installations, replacements, or repairs to chillers, air conditioning, and ventilating equipment and systems. Troubleshoots and executes major or complex repairs. Leads projects to execute complex installation and replacement projects of HVACR systems in campus buildings.
- Serves as the University's technical expert on HVACR system operations, repairs, and maintenance. Plans, schedules, and oversees major HVACR system repair projects, such as the replacement of air handling units, chillers, or boilers and leads emergency repair efforts.
- Oversees the repair efforts of less experienced HVACR technicians executing complex repairs and maintenance on heating, ventilating, air conditioning, and refrigeration (HVACR) systems including air distribution machinery, pneumatic and digital controls, hot and chilled water distribution, and variable volume systems.
- Inspects HVACR systems and their components (e.g. air handling units, chillers, heat exchangers, heating units, building exhaust fans, ventilation equipment, etc.) for the purpose of evaluating operating status and material condition, identifying necessary repairs and recommending a proper course of action
- Installs, maintains, performs diagnostic analysis, and adjusts DDC (Direct Digital Controls), pneumatic, electric and other electronic controls systems for a wide array of HVACR equipment to maintain desired temperatures and humidity levels.
- Coordinates and plans assigned work orders using the Facilities Work Management system to prioritize and schedule work to best meet the needs of Augusta University and its stakeholders. Identifies options, develops solutions, and takes action when responding to stakeholder requests.
- May be required to serve in an on-call status and remain work-ready when scheduled for an on-call period or rotation.
- May be responsible for training, assisting or assigning tasks to lower lever staff.
- Perform all other duties/tasks as required.
Required Qualifications
High School diploma or GED from a recognized State or Federal accredited organization or vocational training in HVACR with 8 years experience or Associates degree from an accredited college or university.
Drivers License
Universal Refrigerant Card
North American Technical Excellence (NATE) HVAC Support Technician Certification or approved equivalent.
Preferred Qualifications
Additional Preferred Experience
Experience with Johnson Controls Metasys, and eight or more years of applicable experience.

Journeyman level of knowledge regarding the installation, maintenance, repair and proper operation of a wide array of HVACR systems and equipment.

Planning and organizing the most cost effective use of materials, manpower, and equipment necessary to safely perform daily assignments to provide timely support to campus customers, campus security, and employee safety.
Shift/Salary/Benefits
Shift: Days: Monday - Friday
Pay Band: 11
Salary Minimum: $27.21/hour
Salary to be commensurate with qualifications of the selected candidate within the established range (generally minimum-midpoint) of the position
