  • Remuneration: $111,341 to $120,557 pa (HEW6) (inclusive of $94,084 to $101,872 salary pa, 17% superannuation and 17.5% recreation leave loading)
  • Location: Both Gardens Point and Kelvin Grove campuses
  • Open to: Aboriginal Australians and Torres Strait Islander people. For this position it is a genuine occupational requirement that it be filled by an Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander person as permitted by and arguable under sections 25, 104 and 105 of the Queensland Anti-Discrimination Act (1991).

Who are we looking for?

We are seeking a Indigenous Australian Student Success Coach to join Oodgeroo Unit, Indigenous Australians, Chancellery Division.

The Indigenous Australian Student Success Coach provides high-quality, culturally responsive support that builds on the strengths of Indigenous Australian students to help them navigate challenges and ensure a positive and enriching student experience. The Indigenous Australian Student Success Coach contributes to the development and implementation of practices that reflect the needs and aspirations of Indigenous Australian students to ensure their success. The Indigenous Australian Student Success Coach works within a case management approach with other QUT support services and develops referral pathways to a range of community-based services and initiatives that support and inspire students to excel and achieve their goals. The Indigenous Australian Student Success Coach will demonstrate initiative while working with other team members, and across the University, to support achieving QUT’s priority for recognising and fostering Indigenous Australian excellence. The position will be responsible for managing additional projects as required. This position reports to the Indigenous Australian Senior Student Success Coach for career planning, development, and performance expectations.

Established in 1991, The Oodgeroo Unit is QUT's Indigenous Australian student success unit, providing admission pathways and support for Indigenous Australian people. The Oodgeroo Unit is responsible for and committed to ensuring pathways to higher education and the academic success of Indigenous Australian people.

This includes;

  • Assisting Indigenous Australian people to enter University.
  • Providing our students with academic, personal, and cultural support throughout their degree.
  • Providing a visible cultural presence at QUT.
  • Promoting real world opportunities for our students.

Our main administration office is located at Gardens Point campus, with facilities at our Kelvin Grove student centre. On both campuses we have computer labs, places to study and work with tutors, and places to meet with other students. All Oodgeroo Unit staff are required to work across both campuses. The Oodgeroo Unit is situated within the Education Portfolio in the Academic Division.

What you need to succeed

  1. Education, training and/or experience equivalent to a degree in education, training or social sciences with subsequent relevant experience working in these fields.
  2. Demonstrated experience working with Indigenous Australian peoples and their communities.
  3. Demonstrated understanding of the challenges Indigenous Australian students encounter in higher education and knowledge of good practice models and the policy landscape shaping high quality student support services.
  4. Demonstrated ability to effectively develop and nurture strong relationships with a range of partners to deliver and improve student centric support services that enrich the student experience.
  5. High level of interpersonal, organisation and communication skills including the ability to liaise with a diverse range of stakeholders to positively influence decision making.
  6. Demonstrated ability to work effectively as a member of a team, apply initiative, exercise judgement, prioritise objectives and deliver results
  7. Demonstrated commitment to equity, diversity and Indigenous Australian engagement.
