Industrial Safety Specialist

Industrial Safety Specialist

Lawrence Berkeley National Lab's (LBNL) Advanced Light Source (ALS) Division has an opening for an Industrial Safety Specialist.

Working under the ALS Safety Manager, the Industrial Safety Specialist leads Work Planning & Control (WPC) to identify hazards, set controls, and enable safe execution of construction, maintenance, and laboratory work. As a core member of the safety team, you'll provide industrial hygiene and technical safety support (e.g., subcontractor oversight, confined space, material handling, lead/asbestos, fall protection, ladder safety), perform inspections and audits, and advise on regulatory compliance. You'll recommend solutions, track corrective actions, and apply sound EHS judgment to keep ALS operations compliant and safe.

The Advanced Light Source is a U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Office of Science national scientific user facility that produces exceptionally bright soft and hard x-ray, ultraviolet, and infrared light. With a strong scientific reputation, expert staff, and advanced capabilities, the ALS attracts thousands of academic and industrial users each year in condensed matter and quantum materials, energy sciences, biosciences, earth and planetary sciences and more.

The ALS is one of five Berkeley Lab user facilities that serve 15,000 users annually. Co-located with the Molecular Foundry, NERSC supercomputing center, and Berkeley Lab's materials, chemical sciences, biosciences, and other divisions, it provides an ideal collaborative environment for innovative scientific discoveries.

The ALS is a global leader in soft x-ray science, and aims to maintain its leadership with ALS-U, a major project to upgrade the facility to a fourth-generation light source. This upgrade will position the facility among the brightest soft x-ray light sources in the world, offering capabilities that no other facility can provide.

  • Support ALS Project Management on health and safety issues primarily during construction phases of projects, and may also include design, planning stages.
  • Serve as a technical field construction health and safety technician providing occupational health and safety support and oversight for moderately complex construction and maintenance projects.

  • Stay current with Berkeley Lab and ALS Health and Safety Policies.
  • Attend regularly scheduled Team and Division meetings and support a collaborative, team building environment.

Programs may include, but are not limited to: user safety, asbestos and lead, noise monitoring, water intrusion mitigation support, chemical exposure monitoring for a variety of agents, decommissioning support and exposure assessment.
  • Coordinate exposure monitoring strategies and maintain IH sampling equipment/calibration records.

We are looking for:

  • BA/BS and 5-7 years of significant and relevant, industrial hygiene and safety experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Demonstrated experience as a construction safety technician or professional with excellent knowledge and understanding of OSHA, ANSI, and other related safety requirements/regulations.
  • Direct experience in applying OSHA, ANSI and other related safety requirements/regulations in a wide variety of construction work environments.
  • Industrial hygiene experience with collecting personal air samples for a variety of chemical agents including writing industrial hygiene sampling reports and data interpretation.
  • Experience collecting lead dust wipe samples, personal and area air samples for asbestos and lead and experience providing oversight of lead workers.
  • Demonstrated experience as an industrial hygienist / industrial safety technician with knowledge and understanding of OSHA, ANSI, and other related health and safety requirements / regulations.
