Industry Assistant or Associate Professor Department of Applied Physics NYU Tandon School of Engineering

The Department of Applied Physics at the NYU Tandon School of Engineering invites applications for a full-time, non-tenured, renewable faculty position at the rank of Industry Assistant or Associate Professor, with a start date of September 1, 2026. While the official start date is Fall 2026, an earlier appointment may be possible depending on departmental needs and candidate availability. The initial appointment is for three years and is renewable contingent on performance.

The Department offers BS degrees in Applied Physics and in Mathematics & Physics, a minor in Quantum Technology, and a newly approved MS program in Quantum Science and Technology, launching in Fall 2026. Faculty in the department teach both introductory physics courses for engineering students and upper-level courses for physics majors.

An Industry Assistant or Associate Professor’s primary responsibilities include teaching, mentoring, and educational innovation, with additional contributions to curricular development, outreach, and departmental service. While the standard teaching load is three courses per semester, this position carries potential opportunities in program and curriculum development that could reduce this load.

In addition to classroom teaching, the position includes a significant role in the development and delivery of a new Quantum Optics laboratory course, to be offered for the first time in Summer 2027. This will involve:

  • Developing experiments and course materials for an advanced optics laboratory (10–12 experiments anticipated)
  • Teaching the course in the laboratory setting once it launches

Teaching load reductions may be provided for these curricular development activities.

We invite applicants with a strong record of teaching and hands-on laboratory development. You should be an excellent teacher in both classroom and instructional laboratory environments. A Ph.D. in experimental physics or a closely related discipline is required, along with substantial on-hand experimental experience in optics, photonics, or quantum optics. A record of effective teaching at the undergraduate or graduate level and/or relevant industrial or professional experience is highly desirable.

Please submit the following materials electronically through the "Apply Now" button.

  • Cover letter
  • Current CV
  • Teaching statement (with emphasis on approaches to undergraduate physics education, innovation and experiential learning, as well as ideas for curricular development and content delivery at the Undergraduate and Graduate levels both in lecture and laboratory environments)
  • Recent teaching evaluations (if available)
  • Names and contact information for three references (referees will be automatically contacted to upload confidential letters via Interfolio)

Review of applications will begin on Monday, December 1, and will continue until the position is filled. For full consideration, applications should be received by that date. Should you have any questions please contact Search Committee Chair: John Di Bartolo at: john.dibartolo@nyu.edu
