Information Specialist AI Research, Libraries and Museums

Job Summary

The Information Specialist collaboratively develops and delivers library services and resources at the intersection of AI, data, and scholarly research by leveraging technical knowledge and skills. Builds partnerships with campus partners to integrate AI tools and emerging research methodologies into the academic research ecosystem.

As a subject liaison for the College of AI, Cyber, and Computing, advances student success and research excellence at UT San Antonio by providing research and instruction services, developing and maintaining strong faculty relationships, and facilitating meaningful use of the Libraries' information resources.

This role develops expertise in and assists researchers in patent and trademark searching.

Core Responsibilities

  1. Uses technical knowledge and skills to provide consultations and workshops on advanced AI research tools and methodologies (e.g., LLMs, AI reasoning models, etc.) to UT San Antonio faculty and students. Evaluates emerging AI research tools for different research needs and disciplines and recommends best practices for academic use.
  2. Provides research support and instruction services to students and faculty. Assists faculty in integrating information resources into face-to-face, hybrid, and online courses and develops associated digital content in a variety of formats. Selects and evaluates materials in all formats to support areas of subject responsibility. Manages collection fund accounts for assigned areas.
  3. Collaborates with researchers on integrating AI tools and methodologies into their research projects throughout the research lifecycle. Supports ethical and responsible use of AI in research, including compliance with relevant laws and guidelines.
  4. Develops expertise to consult with researchers on meta-analysis, evidence synthesis, and systematic reviews across disciplines, integrating AI technologies where appropriate.
  5. Serves on the Artificial Intelligence Advisory Committee to advance responsible and effective use of AI technologies in the Libraries and Museums.
  6. Stays current with emerging trends and developments in AI, evolving research ecosystems, and relevant federal policies.
  7. Performs other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications

  • MLS/MLIS degree from an ALA (American Library Association) accredited institution or a master's degree in AI, cybersecurity, computing, data science, or related fields by time of hire.
  • Two years' experience developing digital content and information resources to include: One year of experience providing teaching and instruction or supporting the academic research enterprise.
  • This position requires the ability to maintain the security and integrity of UT San Antonio and its infrastructure.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Required

  • Demonstrated knowledge of AI technologies, machine learning, and/or data science, including practical experience with programming languages and AI tools and platforms.
  • Ability to identify, build, cultivate, and sustain relationships with multiple stakeholders including library colleagues, campus partners, and faculty.
  • Familiarity with information resources and tools in AI, cybersecurity, computing, data science, or related areas.
  • Ability to work independently with varied user groups in a complex organization and function collaboratively in a rapidly changing team environment.
  • Enthusiasm for continuous learning and professional development.
  • Demonstrated interpersonal and communication (oral and written) skills, including the ability to explain complex concepts to non-expert audiences.

Preferred

  • Familiarity with advanced AI tools, deep learning frameworks, and their application in research methodologies.
  • Experience searching patent information resources and the ability to teach faculty and students best practices for patent searching and analysis.
  • Understanding of the research lifecycle and workflows.
  • Familiarity with specialized research impact tools and issues related to responsible research impact evaluations.
  • Knowledge of meta-analysis, evidence synthesis, and systematic review research methodologies and relevant AI tools.

Working Conditions

  • Hybrid work environment.

Physical Demands

  • Sedentary: Up to 10 lbs. - Ability to exert up to 10 pounds of force to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects.

This position will require working both remotely in Texas and on campus (approximately ten or more days on campus per month). Travel and parking expenses are the employee's responsibility. Applicants must be adaptable and open to working in both environments.
