Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit:
Infrastructure & Operations Services is responsible for the planning, installation, management and support of UNCW's central computing and storage infrastructure. This includes the infrastructure supporting advanced research computing, distance education and other academic initiatives.

Brief Summary of Work for this Position:
The Infrastructure Architect will be responsible for designing, implementing, and architecting systems across a variety of technologies. They will work with multiple teams to assist in architecture design and troubleshooting complex issues.

Key Responsibilities: Server Administration:
Manage and maintain Windows and Linux servers, ensuring optimal performance and security. Develop strategies to streamline common Server Administration tasks such as patching, OS upgrades, and vulnerability remediation.
Infrastructure Administration: Oversee the design and planning of storage solutions, virtualization technologies, and data center operations.
Cloud Architecture:
Design, implement, and manage cloud solutions using Azure or Oracle Cloud Infrastructure (OCI).
M365 Design and Architecture: Develop and maintain Microsoft 365 environments, ensuring they meet organizational needs.
Database Administration: Assist in the design of an efficient and powerful database architecture for UNCW's application and reporting needs.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements:

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or a related field.
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in IT architecture or a similar role.
  • Demonstrated expertise in at least two of the following areas: server administration (Linux and Windows), infrastructure administration, cloud architecture, M365 design and architecture, or database administration. One of these areas must be in Linux administration or Database design and administration as these are critical needs.
  • Experience with cloud architecture.
  • Experience in Microsoft 365 design and architecture.
  • Solid understanding of database administration and optimization.

Preferred Education, Knowledge, Skills & Experience:

  • Relevant certifications (e.g., Red Hat Certified Engineer, Microsoft Certified: Azure Solutions Architect, Oracle Cloud Infrastructure Architect, etc.).
  • Experience with Azure or OCI cloud architecture specifically.
  • Experience with automation and scripting (e.g., PowerShell, Python).
  • Strong Linux skills
  • Experience working in Higher Education or government.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills and the ability to work under pressure.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Strong knowledge of storage, virtualization, and data center management.
  • Proficiency in Windows and Linux server administration.
