Job Description Summary
Positions assigned to this classification are professional level positions which support and are funded by a categorically funded program/project. Continuation of the position is contingent upon refunding of the program/project. Under general supervision, the position assists Gateway to College instructors and staff in supporting high school students enrolled in dual enrollment courses at Laney College. Provides instructional support in college-prep and high school coursework, contributes to a positive learning environment, and assists in academic coaching, workshop facilitation, and student success efforts within the Gateway to College program.
WORK SCHEDULE
Instructional Assistant positions are often less than full-time with a work schedule of five days and less than 40 hours/week. Duties are normally performed 10 or 11 months in a year, but 12-month assignments are possible based on program needs. May be required to work some evenings and Saturdays during peak periods such as registration, onboarding, outreach events, or program orientations.
Duties & Responsibilities
- Assists in the day-to-day coordination of Gateway to College academic support, including scheduling, workshop planning, and tracking student academic progress.
- Supports instructors and counselors in orienting high school students to the college environment and dual enrollment expectations.
- Provides support to students with understanding assignments, time management, and navigating Canvas and other academic platforms.
- Assists individuals and small groups in academic skill development in both general education and guided pathway courses.
- Explains basic concepts, instructions, and resources to support student learning.
- Help students use lab or classroom technology, campus solutions software if applicable.
- Maintains accurate records related to attendance, tutoring sessions, and workshop participation.
- Prepares and organizes instructional materials for classroom and workshop use.
- Operates standard office equipment and personal computers to support instruction and student services.
- Participates in Gateway to College outreach, career exploration, and dual enrollment events.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
- Completion of two (2) years of college with coursework in education, counseling, or a related field; or an equivalent combination of training and experience that demonstrates the ability to assist students academically in a college environment.
- Proficiency in using personal computers and academic platforms (Canvas, Google Workspace, Microsoft Office).
- Commitment to working with students from diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, and ethnic backgrounds, including those who have previously disengaged from high school.
Desirable Qualifications
- Experience supporting high school or college students in academic or tutoring settings.
- Understanding of dual enrollment and high school re-engagement models.
- Familiarity with career pathways or CTE education (e.g., 3D fabrication, engineering, wood tech).
- Strong interpersonal communication and problem-solving skills.
- Organized, energetic, and adaptable to a dynamic learning environment.
- Experience facilitating workshops or group learning sessions.
- Ability to maintain confidentiality, professionalism, and a student-centered approach.
