Student Success Coach
Overview
Join Salem State University's First Year Experience team as a Student Success Coach and make a meaningful impact on students' academic journeys. Success Coaches provides guidance, support, and motivation to a caseload of upper-class students through regular coaching meetings and outreach regarding university resources. In this full-time role, you'll work directly with first-year students to help them navigate university life, develop essential skills, and achieve their educational goals.

Please Note: This position is grant-funded and renewal each year is contingent on continued funding.
Required Qualifications
- Associate’s degree OR Two years of experience supporting high school or college students in academic settings.
- Experience working with technology to manage projects or responsibilities.
- Experience presenting workshops or training sessions to individuals or groups.
Preferred Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree
- Experience working in student support, academic advising, or coaching in a higher education setting.
- Experience supporting a student population from a variety of back grounds and experiences with complex needs
- Ability to maintain confidentiality and work with sensitive student information.
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with a demonstrated ability to build trust and rapport with students.
- Fluency in Spanish or Portuguese
Position Responsibilities
- Support a designated cohort of students, providing targeted support based on common factors and needs (students on warning/probation, sophomores, transfer students, etc.) as well as individual students seeking support.
- Conduct individual success coaching sessions with students by building a trusting, culturally responsive relationship. Implement a coaching curriculum designed for specific student needs/concerns.
- Utilize university early warning and retention software to follow up on student referrals, analyze student trends and concerns, and coordinate/monitor outreach to students.
- Refer and support students in navigating campus resources, including advising, tutoring, financial aid, counseling, and student involvement opportunities. Assist students in developing self-advocacy skills.
- Assist students in identifying academic, personal, and external factors impacting academic performance and university engagement.
- Guide students in approaching their academic experience from a strengths-based perspective. Collaborate with students to develop action-oriented academic strategies to address areas of concern, including time management, study strategies, class attendance, and resource utilization.
- Maintain detailed records of student interactions, goals, and outcomes for reporting purposes.
- Coordinate outreach to students regarding university deadlines and processes based on the academic calendar.
- Facilitate workshops or group coaching sessions focused on academic success strategies.
- Assist in the overall management of the Office of Student Success and the First Year Experience and implementation of office/university programs/initiatives. Work collaboratively with students, faculty, staff, and family members.
- Represent the office at selected January and Summer Orientation sessions, Open Houses, Accepted Student Days, and other relevant events. Coordinate information tabling on campus to promote resources and support programs.
- Promote a sense of belonging and demonstrate sensitivity to students, faculty, and staff of varying racial, ethnic, religious, gender, gender identity disability, sexual orientation, and socioeconomic backgrounds and learning styles.
Working Location
This is an onsite position in Salem, MA with on-campus, in-person responsibilities, which may require occasional on evenings and weekends.
