Instructional Support Specialist
Job Description
The Instructional Support Specialist (ISS) will ensure the successful delivery of Anatomy and Physiology (A&P) labs each semester for the Human Biology Program which has 500-600 majors. The ISS will serve as part of the instructional support staff, oversee the maintenance program for laboratory equipment, advise on the use of laboratory equipment, and supervise and train graduate teaching assistants who instruct lab sections. The ISS reports to the Department Chair and will actively collaborate with the Anatomy and Physiology lecture instructor and the Director of the Human Biology Program.
Essential Functions
Lab and Instructional Planning and Preparation
- Design, develop, and plan experiments, test and revise protocols
- Oversee, maintain, and organize laboratory equipment and instructional spaces
- Order equipment, supplies, and materials and ensure the preparation of instructional materials.
- Coordinate and curate lab teaching materials for all labs
- Assure that all supplies and equipment are accessible for the instructional laboratories.
- Curate teaching materials for Human Osteology (AANT 311)
- Attend meetings with the course director, faculty, and teaching assistants to ensure success and quality of labs
Instruction
- Instruct A&P lab sections each semester, as assigned
- Teach courses as the instructor of record as assigned by the Department Chair
- Coordinate the evaluation for student performance in A&P labs and provide course director with laboratory grades each semester
Supervision
- Supervise teaching assistants who teach lab sections and work-study students, plan and assign work and provide appropriate training and instruction
- Provide primary or secondary supervision to Instructional Support Technicians, Associates, and Assistants
- Coordinate scheduling of teaching assistants and ensure training of teaching assistants assigned to assist with A&P instruction
- Provide leadership, oversight and direction to direct reports to assure goals, programs, activities, and personnel practices are consistent with and contribute to the University's goals and strategies. Lead employees for maximum performance and dedication. Complete performance management feedback and goals timely and per requirements
Departmental, College, and University Service
- Participate in various service activities, such as committee work, participating in college and department meetings and recruitment initiatives, as applicable
- Other reasonable duties as assigned
Functional and Supervisory Relationships
- Reports to Department of Anthropology Department Chair
- Works closely with Instructor of Record for Anatomy and Physiology lecture to determine content and structure of lab sections.
- Supervises the following positions: Teaching Assistants and work-study students
- May supervise other employees as assigned, such as other Instructional Support Staff
Job Requirements
This position is designed to oversee lab instruction for courses in Human Anatomy and Physiology. The candidate must have excellent knowledge of human anatomical structure and physiologic functions. Strong organizational, and communication skills

Requirements
Required Qualifications:
- Master's degree in Biological Anthropology, Human Biology, or other related discipline from a college or University accredited by the US Department of Education or internationally recognized accrediting organization.
- Experience in teaching Human Anatomy especially at the undergraduate level.
- Experience in teaching undergraduate courses in Biological Anthropology and/or Human Biology
- Experience with operating and maintaining laboratory equipment

Preferred Qualifications:
- Doctorate degree (e.g., Ph.D.) in Biological Anthropology, Biology, or related field from a college or University accredited by the US Department of Education or internationally recognized accrediting organization.
- Supervisory experience
Additional Information
Professional Rank and Salary Grade: Instructional Support Specialist, SL4; $65,000-70,000.
