The Foothill-De Anza Community College District is currently accepting applications for the faculty position of Instructor, 2D/3D Design, De Anza College.

The Foothill - De Anza Community College District does not have a remote work policy. All employees are expected to be available to work in person and on-site per the requirement of the department.

DESCRIPTION OF THE POSITION:
Teach three-dimensional and two-dimensional visual art and design courses to a diverse student population at a college committed to student equity. The instructor will be expected to teach in two disciplines. Two thirds of teaching load will be in 3D practices: sculpture and 3D Design, and one third of the load will be in 2D practices, such as principles of 2D design, beginning drawing, design and color. This faculty member will also serve as the lead for the 3D program in Visual Arts and Design, providing academic and program leadership to support the ongoing development of equitable and inclusive curricula, facilities, and student learning experiences.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES OF THE POSITION INCLUDE:

  1. Teach introductory, intermediate, and advanced courses in three-dimensional design and sculpture, as well as foundational two-dimensional art and design courses. Courses may include, but are not limited to, sculpture, three-dimensional design fundamentals, beginning drawing, two-dimensional design fundamentals, and color theory. Instruction will serve art majors and non-majors using culturally relevant pedagogy and inclusive teaching practices across a range of media, concepts, and skill levels. Instruction emphasizes foundational design principles, form, space, composition, and visual language, that support student success across transfer, CTE, and interdisciplinary pathways.
  2. Demonstrate technical and conceptual expertise in both 3D and 2D practices. Skills should include but are not limited to traditional and contemporary sculptural processes; safe and effective use of tools, equipment, and materials; and foundational 2D methods such as beginning drawing and design. The successful candidate will communicate the importance of visual language, spatial thinking, material exploration, and conceptual development.
  3. Possess demonstrated knowledge of contemporary art theory, design principles, and the historical context of 3D Design / sculpture and 2D art practices. Teaching assignments may include a combination of in-person instruction on the De Anza campus and online or hybrid courses.
  4. Collaborate with full-time laboratory and studio support staff to oversee facilities and equipment and OSHA compliance, assist with material and equipment purchases, and contribute to budget planning and funding proposals for the Visual Arts and Design program.
  5. Maintain relevant professional and industry connections and contribute to advisory boards as appropriate. Support Career Technical Education (CTE) and transfer pathways by promoting student persistence and completion of credit and noncredit certificates and degrees, in collaboration with counselors. Develop community outreach efforts-both professional and academic-to promote the mission, achievements, and opportunities within the Visual Arts and Design program.
  6. Standard duties expected of all faculty include development and evaluation of curricula, development, refinement, and assessment of course and program Student Learning Outcomes (SLOs), maintaining scheduled office hours, attending department and division meetings, pursuing professional growth activities, service on district and/or college committees, and performing other duties consistent with the role of an instructor. Instructors also have the opportunity to participate in campus extra-curricular activities.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  1. Understanding of, sensitivity to, and respect for the diverse academic, socio-economic, ethnic, religious, and cultural backgrounds, disability, and sexual orientation of community college students, faculty and staff.
  2. Master's in fine arts, art, or art history OR Bachelor's in any of the above AND Master's in humanities OR the equivalent
    (NOTE: "Master's in fine arts" as used here refers to any master's degree in the subject matter of fine arts, which is defined to include visual studio arts such as drawing, painting, sculpture, printmaking, ceramics, textiles, and metal and jewelry art; and also, art education and art therapy. It does not refer to the "Master of Fine Arts" (MFA) degree when that degree is based on specialization in performing arts or dance, film, creative writing or other non plastic arts.)

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
1. College-level instructional experience in sculpture, three-dimensional design, and two-dimensional design.
2. Experience working with and effectively supporting a diverse community college student population.
3. Experience with techniques and equipment used in three-dimensional practices, including woodworking, metalworking, model making, mold making, 3D printing, and laser cutting.
4. Experience teaching foundational drawing, two-dimensional design principles, and color theory.
5. Working knowledge of basic tool and equipment maintenance, with the ability to teach safe operation, material selection, and proper studio and shop procedures.
6. Experience teaching with both online learning tools and hands-on lab/studio modalities, including the use of learning management systems for online or hybrid coursework.
7. Demonstrated ability to develop, revise, and assess curriculum (credit and noncredit) that supports academically and culturally diverse students.
8. Ongoing interest in, and engagement with, emerging technologies that inform contemporary 3D and 2D practices.

In addition, successful candidates will demonstrate:
1. Ability to teach and communicate effectively with individuals differing in age, gender, ethnicity, educational background, and economic status.
2. Ability to adapt teaching methods to meet diverse student needs, learning styles, and evolving instructional modalities.
3. Ability to encourage students to engage actively in their own learning and to develop strong critical thinking skills.
4. Ability to work closely and cooperatively with faculty, classified professionals, and administrators as part of a collaborative team.
5. Ability to analyze and respond to student success, completion, retention, and persistence data, including data disaggregated for diverse student groups.
6. Engagement with the community as a representative of the discipline and department and participation in college-wide and district-wide planning efforts.
7. Commitment to diversifying curriculum delivery to meet evolving student needs (for example, Credit for Prior Learning, Competency-Based Education, short-term offerings, Dual Enrollment, and Incarcerated Student education).

WORKING CONDITIONS:
Environment:
1. Employees primarily work in an art laboratory/studio, classroom, and/or office environment that may contain various equipment and tools, with moderate to high noise levels and controlled to varied temperature conditions. Employees may work outdoors and are occasionally exposed to loud noise levels and cold and/or hot temperatures. Employees are exposed to hazardous materials and mechanical and/or electrical equipment and tools.

HIRING RANGE: $76,596.00 - $123,297.00 annually plus benefits; actual placement is based on applicant's verified education and experience.
