Columbia School of Nursing invites applications for the position of Director, Interprofessional Simulation Education. The successful candidate will lead our state-of-the-art simulation center, guiding the integration of simulation-based education with clinical nursing education. The Director of Interprofessional Simulation Education is responsible for leading the development, implementation, and evaluation of advanced simulation education programs, including the integration of Virtual Reality (VR) and Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies. This position aims to enhance student learning, clinical competencies, and interprofessional collaboration in alignment with national nursing standards. The Director will report directly to the Assistant Dean of Simulation and will collaborate with faculty and clinical partners to incorporate simulation into both didactic and clinical experiences, ensuring high-quality, safe and effective learning outcomes for all nursing students.

Key Responsibilities:

1. Curriculum Development:

  • Design and develop simulation curricula that aligns with the standards of the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC), the Commission on Collegiate nursing Education (CCNE), Society for Simulation in Healthcare (SSH) and the International Nursing Association of Clinical Simulation and Learning (INACSL),
  • Ensure simulation learning experiences are aligned with nursing competencies, standards, and current best practices, incorporating cutting-edge technologies.

2. Collaboration with Faculty:

  • Interface with didactic and clinical faculty to bridge coursework with real-world settings, ensuring simulation-based learning is integrated seamlessly into the curriculum.
  • Work with faculty to create comprehensive simulation programs that enhance learning outcomes and align with academic goals.

3. Simulation Learning Experience Development:

  • Develop, implement, and evaluate simulation scenarios that are leveled to the learner's year of study.
  • Design pre-learning activities (e.g., admit-to-simulation tickets), develop detailed pre- and debrief scripts for faculty, and utilize situational awareness rooms to ensure patient/provider safety during simulation.
  • Implement both formative and summative assessments of learners to evaluate performance and guide future learning.
  • Collect and analyze simulation learning experience evaluations (both learner and faculty) to drive continuous improvement.

4. Scaffold Learning Experience Design:

  • Ensure simulation scenarios and learning experiences are scaffolded across levels of learning (e.g., from entry-level students to advanced practitioners), allowing for progressive skill development and competency building.

5. Integration of VR/AI Technologies:

  • Lead the integration of Virtual Reality (VR) and Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies into simulation learning environments to enhance realism, adaptability, and individualized learning experiences.
  • Collaborate with faculty and technology specialists to design VR/AI-based simulations that allow for diverse clinical scenarios and provide real-time feedback to learners.
  • Ensure the technical functionality and efficacy of VR/AI tools in simulation exercises, troubleshooting any issues that arise to maintain smooth delivery.

6. Clinical Integration and Quality Assurance:

  • Collaborate with clinical sites to ensure that simulation scenarios incorporate clinical policies, procedures, and accreditation standards (e.g., Joint Commission), enhancing the alignment of simulation experiences with real-world clinical settings.
  • Integrate principles of Quality Assurance/Continuous Quality Improvement (QA/CQI), High Reliability Organizations (HRO), and patient/provider safety into simulation education programs, ensuring best practices are followed throughout the simulation process.
  • Oversee the development of clinical skills days where students can practice key competencies in a controlled, hands-on environment. These activities should reflect the standards of care required during clinical rotations and promote patient safety and effective clinical practice.

7. Competency-Based Evaluation:

  • Design and implement competency-based rubrics for evaluation simulation performance, ensuring a clear and consistent approach to assessing clinical skills and knowledge.

Required Qualifications:

  • Masters degree in Nursing from a recognized institute of higher education
  • Active NYS RN license
  • American Heart Association (AHA) Basic Life Support (BLS), Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS), and Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) certifications
  • Minimum 5 years of clinical nursing experience
  • Minimum 5 years of simulation-based education experience

Preferred Qualifications

  • Doctoral degree (PhD, DNP, EdD or equivalent related degree)
  • American Heart Association (AHA) Basic Life Support (BLS), Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS), and Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) Instructor
  • Certified Healthcare Simulation Educator (CHSE)
  • Membership in the Society for Simulation in Healthcare (SSH)

Instructor- $100,000 - $125,000

Assistant Professor- $126,000 - $150,000
