Job Summary

The Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Division of Maternal Fetal Medicine, at the University of Colorado has an opening for a full-time Diabetes Educator at the rank of Instructor between a 0.6 – 1.0 FTE. This position will provide support to the freestanding Maternal Fetal Medicine clinic, located in Downtown Denver, Littleton, Parker, and Fort Collins as well as the Children's Hospital Colorado – North Campus location.

The duties of this position include, but are not limited to:

  • Provide individual education, nutritional and health assessments, counselling and teaching, patient focused nutritional plans and behavior change within the CDCES scope of practice.
  • Support the implementation of patient centered insulin initiation and/or ongoing diabetes management orders as authorized by the MFM provider.
  • Performs CGM placement, education, and data interpretation to identify glycemic patterns and collaborates with MFM care team on therapeutic adjustments.
  • Participate in diabetes program planning, delivery, and evaluation.
  • Maintain accurate and up-to-date clinical notes in accordance with Maternal Fetal Medicine guidelines.
  • Participate in team and staff meetings to support both service delivery and division goals.
  • Work individually and collaboratively in the development and implementation of quality improvement initiatives and activities.
  • Work in a manner that provides privacy and confidentiality.
  • Ability to practice independently and must demonstrate continuing education in diabetes management.
  • Ability to provide services via telehealth and in person.
  • Ability to bill for services accurately.

This position will be scheduled Monday through Friday, 8:00 am to 4:30 pm with no on-call obligation. The four SOM freestanding clinics have 2 Diabetes Educators positions who work collaboratively to provide services for patients across all sites. CU MFM values a work culture in which our team members are well respected. The MFM division is comprised of a dynamic team, which includes 3 dedicated Fetal Surgeons, 24 MFM physicians, 1 Physician Assistant, 1 Nurse Practitioner, 2 Genetic Counselors, 1 OB Endocrine Physician, 2 Diabetes Educators, 12 Sonographers, 1 Nurse Navigator, 8 Medical Assistants, and 4 dedicated schedulers.

Work Location: Hybrid – this role is eligible for a hybrid schedule of 1-2 days per week at a clinic location and as needed for in-person meetings.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications: Applicants must meet minimum qualifications at the time of hire. Licensure /Certifications: Master's degree in Nutrition, Certified Diabetes Educator and Dietitian, Basic Life Support (BLS) Healthcare Provider required. Minimum of three years' experience as a Certified Diabetes Care and Education Specialist working in a clinical practice within the last five years.

Preferred Qualifications: Experience and training in OBGYN or MFM, Experience, or an interest, in the management of diabetes in pregnancy and basic prenatal care, Expertise with insulin management, glucometers, and continuous glucose monitoring systems, Bilingual, Spanish-speaking, Computer Skills: Basic keyboarding skills, MS Office, EPIC.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: Ability to maintain quality control standards, Ability to identify problems and recommend solutions, Ability to effectively communicate at all levels, including physicians, leadership, and staff, Ability to work within large, complex healthcare systems, Ability to maintain confidentiality and communicate in person, by phone, or in writing, Ability to interpret, communicate and document with proper medical terminology, Ability to attest to computer proficiency and learn new computer applications, Ability to keyboard/type, write legibly and accurately record information, Ability to analyze and interpret data, Ability to organize workflow with a particular focus on tracking patient care and improving patient flow, Ability to deal calmly and courteously with people, Effectively copes with fast-paced environment and typical job stressors, Ability to manage time and work tasks, Ability to follow oral and written instructions and established procedures, Ability to multitask efficiently and effectively, Ability to maintain accuracy, consistency, and confidentiality, Ability to perform basic filing, office procedures and word processing, Ability to adhere to all policies and procedures, including but not limited to standards for safety, attendance, punctuality, and personal appearance.
