About the College

Spelman College seeks instructors dedicated to excellence in teaching and to the continued enhancement of the academic environment for students and colleagues. Founded in 1881, Spelman College is a private four-year liberal arts college located in Atlanta, GA. The oldest historically Black college for women in the United States, Spelman is a member of the Atlanta University Center Consortium and Atlanta Regional Consortium for Higher Education.

Position Description

The Department of World Languages and Cultures at Spelman College invites applications for a one-year Instructor of Spanish position beginning August 1, 2026. This renewable appointment, contingent upon performance and available funding, carries a 4–4 teaching load and supports the department’s mission to foster global competence, linguistic proficiency, and intercultural understanding among students from diverse backgrounds.

The successful candidate will teach a range of undergraduate Spanish language and culture courses at the beginning and intermediate levels, support departmental initiatives, and actively participate in student engagement and mentoring.

Responsibilities

  • Teach four courses per semester (4–4 load) at the elementary and intermediate levels of Spanish language and culture. All courses are taught in-person.
  • Employ communicative, student-centered, and proficiency-based approaches to language instruction.
  • Contribute to departmental and college-wide initiatives, including curricular development, assessment, and cultural programming.
  • Participate in student advising and mentoring, particularly for students pursuing minors or majors in Spanish or related fields.
  • Engage in professional development related to language pedagogy, inclusive teaching, and digital or experiential learning.

Appointment and Compensation

This is a full-time, non-tenure-track, multi-year appointment with the possibility of renewal, contingent upon satisfactory performance and institutional needs. Salary is commensurate with qualifications and experience.

Qualifications

  • M.A. or Ph. D. in Spanish, Applied Linguistics, or a closely related field by the time of appointment.
  • Native or near-native proficiency in Spanish and English.
  • Demonstrated excellence in teaching Spanish at the college level.
  • Commitment to student-centered teaching, cultural inclusivity, and global perspectives.
