Founded in 1881, Spelman College is a private four-year liberal arts college located in Atlanta, GA. The oldest historically Black college for women in the United States, Spelman is a member of the Atlanta University Center Consortium and Atlanta Regional Consortium for Higher Education.
Position Description
The Department of World Languages and Cultures at Spelman College invites applications for a one-year Instructor of Spanish position beginning August 1, 2026. This renewable appointment, contingent upon performance and available funding, carries a 4–4 teaching load and supports the department’s mission to foster global competence, linguistic proficiency, and intercultural understanding among students from diverse backgrounds.
The successful candidate will teach a range of undergraduate Spanish language and culture courses at the beginning and intermediate levels, support departmental initiatives, and actively participate in student engagement and mentoring.
Responsibilities
- Teach four courses per semester (4–4 load) at the elementary and intermediate levels of Spanish language and culture. All courses are taught in-person.
- Employ communicative, student-centered, and proficiency-based approaches to language instruction.
- Contribute to departmental and college-wide initiatives, including curricular development, assessment, and cultural programming.
- Participate in student advising and mentoring, particularly for students pursuing minors or majors in Spanish or related fields.
- Engage in professional development related to language pedagogy, inclusive teaching, and digital or experiential learning.
Appointment and Compensation
This is a full-time, non-tenure-track, multi-year appointment with the possibility of renewal, contingent upon satisfactory performance and institutional needs. Salary is commensurate with qualifications and experience.

Qualifications
- M.A. or Ph. D. in Spanish, Applied Linguistics, or a closely related field by the time of appointment.
- Native or near-native proficiency in Spanish and English.

- Commitment to student-centered teaching, cultural inclusivity, and global perspectives.
